Raptor 10krpms - worth the money?

    Hey all,

Upgraded to a newer motherboard and CPU earlier this year but I'm still using 2 120Gb IDE disks for booting off and for mass storage. I need to get a new disk I think as I'm having to juggle partitions about to keep free space on my partitions.

What I was wondering was given my boot disk is a UDMA100 drive (no idea what RPM) would I get a noticable performance difference if I put in a 74Gb 10krpm Raptor? Wasn't thinking about RAID0 just now, if they're really good I might save and buy 3 and RAID5 them

Mainly tho I just want things like HL2 and Lock On to load quicker as these take an eternity loading levels...

    TIA

over you old drive there will be nice a increase in performance but personally I need more storage than performance so I would get one of those 16mb cache 300gb Maxtor Diamond 10.

I think just having a sata drive would help, raptor might be overkill but its up2 you The rest of your gear seems pretty top notch, go for it but remember they is quite loud compared to average drives.

Yes they are very fast especially if you RAID 0 them. It's really the only way you can take advantage of SATA's increased data transfer rate since most drives have a physical limit of around 60 megabytes per second.

The optimal setup is to boot from a Raptor RAID zero array and use a second large capacity SATA drive for data and programs.

The old 36GB Raptors were loud but the new 74GB ones are very quiet.

If you have the cash, why not.

I went from a 80GB 2mb WD to a 74GB raptor as me bot drive, not really much difference at all, apart from windows boot up time, and slighty quicker loading times.

You thought about bunging a £10 promise raid card in there and raiding your current drives? i'm assuming they are identical.

The raptors are fast, when they came out they were blinding, but that was 2 years ago now? and the performance gap is narrowing.

I sold my raptors and have brought SATA-II Hitachi drives (80GB) and RAID 0'd them and tbh I can't tell the difference

There is probably less than 2% difference between the two but the hitachis have it for me as they are cheaper and quieter (I sold 2 36GB Raptors for £110 and brought 4 SATA-II drives for £38 a piece!)

The 74GB raptors were meant to be quieter than the old 36GBs. The 74GB models just had a revision so they now have fluid bearings instead of ball bearing so they're quieter again.

I personally have a samsung spinpoint and its fast IMO

Even a raptor is nowhere near max throughput for SATA.

As for seeing a difference, you might see some, but it's unlikely to blow you away.
If you have money to burn, go scsi.

    wow, thx for the responses.

my current hard disks are not identical, the Maxtor is UDMA133 the Samsung is IIRC UDMA100 and their capacities are slightly different. Probably not safe to try RAID0'ing them?

My ideal would be 3x SCSI Ultra320's in RAID5 but that's not realistic... at least I wouldn't imagine it is, haven't priced them yet. *yet*...

EDIT: WOW i could build a whole new rig for the cost of 3x 73Gb Seagate Cheetah SCSI disks and a RAID controller...

My 36GB raptors were not loud at all. They also where a major disapointment in speed, even when I had them when they first came out. The newer 74GB raptors are faster, but not by that much. Most of the heavy use I put my drives through are transfers of a few very large files and raptors have never been much better at this than good, 7,200 rpm drives.

I've never seen the need for a fast boot drive, as when I use multiple hardrives the boot drive is the one used the least. I would save about 3 seconds a day with a blazing fast boot drive as I reboot once or twice a day at the most.

If you want fast file transfer for big files a couple of 7200s in RAID0 is your best bet. Only worth going for raptors if you need the lower access time really.
