Asus a7v8x-x problem

hi guys, today i bought a new asus a7v8x-x mobo, i have an AMD 1800+ XP processor, which according to the manual, should work. When i boot up, it took me to the bios, where i select 1513 mhz i think, something like that, i reset....but the computer just hanged.... so i dropped the cpu to 1.3 instead, and now it works.... but an amd 1800xp is faster than 1.3.......isnt it?

also in windows xp home edition, under my computer,properties, general, it is showing as an MP and not Xp (it definatley is an XP)

any suggestions.


i have just purchased an Thoroughbread XP 2600+ 333fsb processor....but im bricking myself now that the same thing will happen.

i also have an msi geforce 4 ti4400 128mb agp card, 1gig of ram (1 512 stick 2100, 2 256 sticks 2100)


im really baffled.

I had this problem with my A7V8X My 2200+ was being locked to 1300MHz, i took off the heatsink reapplied thermal grease and it seemed to fix it.
U tried:
Reseat the ram
Yank out everythin but the bare essentials and try agen.
Clear teh cmos see if that makes a difference.
U checked for bios updates?

compund....havent got any, will get some tomorrowa nd see if that helps. there are some bios updates out, but nothing major is fixed in them, just some lan things.

BELLY BOY.....you NEED thrmal compound.....Silver if possible.

DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT A THIN SMOOTH LAYER BETWEEN HEATSINK AND CHIP.

IT IS ESSENTIAL and you will go to prison if ya dont do it

am on another machine.

my duron950 machine has been running for a year without any thermal paste, its fine, though the temps are like 45°c (ALU heatsink, and no casefans aswell!!)

temp on this was around that, but with 7 case fans. i have an aluminium heat sink and a fan.

alu heatsink!!! get a copper one! (ill be going to silver soon, for my waterblocks!)

cheap copper heatsink is about £8-12 which is much better than alu ones....

problem solved. put compund on, and bought a copper heatsink for an athlon 3000+ (better to be safe than sorry), the temp is now steady at 41 degrees....yesterday, just at the bios point it was at 50 degrees, no wonder it was shutting off, must have crossed the threshold point and shut down.

but it's working now, thanks for the help guys.
