    Wma

First off, I use WMA because it has true gapless playback (in WMP anyway) - something I've never managed with MP3.

I'm looking for some non-WMP software that will allow me to rip to WMA in bitrates higher than 160kbps. I don't like all the album art and other associated **** that WMP downloads and stores in random hidden files with the music files. All third-party software such as CDex only seems to offer bitrates upto 160kbps...

    Can anyone help?

i find dbpoweramp to be the best, you can get a codec from the website for it. Although the current version only works for 30 days or something before you have to register, if you can find an older version 9 or 10, then it works forever.

WMA isn't designed for gapless playback, and you're locking yourself into a false situation (the codec microsoft license for use on portable players is designed not to play back gaplessly)

why not use a codec which is REALLY designed with that in mind, like ogg vorbis?

The only portable player that supports gapless playback is the iRiver anyway

I downloaded Windows Media Encoder but couldn't figure out how to use it as a standalone application or as a plugin. If anyone can help that'd be appreciated

And regardless of what it was "designed" for... WMA plays gaplessly in WMP, MP3 doesn't.
