A64 Venice Overclocking - Maximum Voltage?

I'm overclocking my A64 3500+ and it's currently 32ºC @ 2.8GHz running on a DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR. My problem is, I've reached a point where I can't go any further (in Prime95) without increasing the core voltage, which is already at 1.71V.

I was wondering if increased voltage was a problem for reasons other than simply temperature.

So basically, if I increase the voltage any more, am I likely to damage my CPU even if the temperature doesn't go up dramatically?

    Thanks.

Wow, what cooler are you using?

Is that with Cool N Quiet, what temps load are you getting?

it's a home-made cooling system...I modded a water chiller/dispenser with a watercooling kit so the water is being chilled...I'll do a guide on it one of these days.

I left Cool N Quiet disabled...what does it do?

The CPU peaks 45ºC at full load...It seems that the motherboard may be reaching its limits now rather than the CPU!

I still wish to know; is it safe to increase the core voltage over 1.7V?

Yes that kind of voltage can greatly shorten the life of your CPU. If you change CPUs every month I wouldn't worry. If you keep it for months or years you may want to back it off a bit, even with chilled water.

My 3700+ San Diego runs 24/7 crunching SETI at 2830MHz with only 1.52 volts on air. You should play around with the voltages. You shouldn't need to run that kind of voltage to get a good overclock, especially with your cooling.

Hmm. Perhaps it's the motherboard then? Its FSB (HTT) is at 250MHz now...

If it is the motherboard, would that result in Prime95 errors?

I'll pull back on the voltage and see what happens.

Back at 1.55V now and when I run Prime95 I get an error almost instantly

What DDR volts? What RAM model? What do you use your computer for mostly?

What HTT mult you got set?

DDR is currently all the way back - underclocked as I'm finding the maximum CPU frequency right now.

I use the computer for a huge range of things...2d and 3d graphics, programming, gaming

HTT seems to reach a max of 250 and i can't boot higher - is this normal?

multiplier: x 11.0 (at 10.5 the frequency is 2.6 something and I don't get errors in Prime95. At 11.0 benchmarks and gaming is stable but I do get errors in Prime95)

There's no such thing as a half multi on A64s. I don't know why they have them in the bios TBH. Try setting the multi to 8 or 9 and maxing out the board to see if it will get above 250. I take it you've reduced the Hypertransport multi to 4x or 3x?

yeah i went down to 8x multi...it would post but XP wouldn't boot above 250 HTT...is it safe to increase the chipset voltage at all?

hypertransport multi is at 4x...tried lowering it to 3x when i went over 250MHz HTT but still no luck.

I did read that there is an update to the BIOS which improves support specifically for the Venice core - haven't tried it yet but that could help things.

That's definitely something to do. Probably a good idea to set clocks to stock before flashing though.

Should be safe to increase chipset voltage too, what's it at at the moment?
