What size PSU do I need?

Hi, I hope to be putting the following components into a system:

    Pentium D 3.2
    Nvidia 7800 GTX
    Geil PC5300 2GB
    Hitachi 400GB 7200rpm
    WD 72GB 10000rpm

And the usual DVD-RW, TV Card etc....

But the question is how big a PSU do I need? Is a 350W Big enough? What should I cut down to make a 350W one suitable?

    Cheers for the advice!

350W will only be suitable if it is a decent brand. Even then you might be pushing it. There's no way I'd run that system on a generic PSU though.

Have you got one already? If so what is it?

I'll wait to see what you have got before I dish out Tagan recommendations again .

    Oh too late!

With such a quality PC why get a crappy PSU.

Id say at least a 520Watt OCZ. hell id spend a bit more and get a 600W OCZ or a Pc power and cooling 510.

Well the problem is, I know it's pushing it, but hey i'm crazy that I wanted to shove it all into a Shuttle, and looking at the SD31P and apparantly shuttle psus are good but I don't think you can fit a better one inside it.

Anybody able to tell me otherwise?

I am of course looking at going down the Mini/Midi route but have found the Shuttle I have currently has been great because I moved around every few weeks and like to take it with me. So I've got this tie between getting a Shuttle, and if I do then I may have to lower the spec a bit, but I'm not really sure hence asking, or just gettting a physically larger computer which is not quite so portable.

    Thanks for your advice,

I would say it would all be fine in the new Shuttle. At the end of the day they are specifically made for the specs you have posted so things should be fine.

    ^^ I don't get that one??

But thanks for the help here, would be interested to hear other ppl's opinions, but I think probably a case of waiting for the Shuttle SD31P to appear at retail then.

Just ignore me, your question should be how powerful or something along those lines. Its just funny when you say big as i get images of house sized psus flying through my head.

All my first-time-builder mates say that, asking me how big my PSU is :/

They are expecting it to be like OMFG MAN thats BIGGA THAN MEH CASE!!11

As for the PSU prob, brand is quite significant. Tagan PSU's have a very high reputation, and thats the brand that I would seek first. Lol my mate is running his A64 system with a 6800 Ultra etc on a 350W PSU - I don't know how he does it but I wouldn't recommend something that low, just to be on the safe side, eventhough nVidia state less power is nessecary for the 7800.

No, in Custom PC it specifically states 'it requires a 400W PSU, as opposed to a 480W PSU for a 6800 Ultra,'

So I suppose the question i'm left with after all of that about the "power" of a PSU is will this system be dangerously unstable on a 350W PSU inside a Shuttle, using the original PSU? I've been running a P4 3.2GHz, 2GB PC3200, 400GB 7200rpm, Radeon X800XT 256 PE, on a 250W and is slightly unstable and will quit games after a bit sometimes, but I know having used a 9600XT 256 on it that was absolutely fine no problemo whatsoever.

From what I've heard I think I will take the gamble when Shuttle get the system out, unless anybody has a strong objection? Or knows where you can get a more than 350W PSU for a Shuttle?

    Cheers,

    ShMeE

^^ The Nvidia website, under the FAQ section claims that the 7800 wants 350W, but the X800 I've been using wants a 400W or higher power, and my 250W hasn't exactly met that!! So I actually can't imagine there being a problem
