searched recent threads, not one really answered my question about venice cores

ok, first off, let me tell you my system.

    Epox 9NPA+ Ultra
    X800 XL PCIe
    1 Gig Corsair Valueselect PC3200
    Sonata II Case
    Audigy 2 Zs

    now here's my question

i don't know whether to get the 3000+ or 3500+ venice core BECAUSE whenever i visit an overclocking website or browse the forum, not a lot of people have the same setup i do.

i'm trying to build a gaming PC that'll one day become my Windows Media Center PC.

i read a lot that overclocking the 3000+ is easy to do; all i want to do is get the 1.8 Ghz to 2.2 Ghz, an overclock of a modest 400 mhz (which from what i read, is pretty simple). HOWEVER, i don't know which fans/cooling system i would need. a lot of people suggest the TR XP-120/90 but it's quite loud. i'm looking for a cheap 20-30 dollar solution with less than 21 dBa sound.

has anyone tried OCing with the Epox MoBo? is it easy? good? hard? if it's not a good mobo to OC with, i'll go with 3500+ with stock cooling. i just want the 2.2 Ghz, i'll be fine with that much performance.

i have to add that i don't have any other cooling devices in mind (fans on the case) other than what comes stock from the sonata II (and i believe the stock is simply the PSU fan).

if OCing the venice is as easy as everyone makes out and running 2.2 Ghz without instability or frying my CPU, then i'll grab the venice and a decent heat sink fan.

otherwise, i'll put down some $$ and get the 3500+.

    what do you people think?

PS, is OCing to 2.2 ghz easy with stock 3000+ fan?

Overclocking is never guaranteed but you'd be unlucky if you couldn't manage that.

HOWEVER, i don't know which fans/cooling system i would need. a lot of people suggest the TR XP-120/90 but it's quite loud. i'm looking for a cheap 20-30 dollar solution with less than 21 dBa sound.
The XP-90/120 are only as loud as the fan you fit them with. A low speed 120mm fan on the XP120 should give excellent cooling with very little noise. However the stock HSF supplied with a retail processor should be good enough to run 2.2GHz so you could try that and see how much noise it makes, and buy a better cooler if it's too loud.

has anyone tried OCing with the Epox MoBo? is it easy? good? hard? if it's not a good mobo to OC with, i'll go with 3500+ with stock cooling. i just want the 2.2 Ghz, i'll be fine with that much performance.
Haven;t got one myself, but in a couple of reviews I read they had no problems getting the board to the 245MHz you'd need to run a 3000 at 2.2GHz.

i have to add that i don't have any other cooling devices in mind (fans on the case) other than what comes stock from the sonata II (and i believe the stock is simply the PSU fan).
An intake fan would be a good idea. I had an idea the Sonata already has a 120mm intake fan but I could be wrong, not really a case enthusiast.

if OCing the venice is as easy as everyone makes out and running 2.2 Ghz without instability or frying my CPU, then i'll grab the venice and a decent heat sink fan.
Well Overclocking is never guaranteed, it's always a risk. In this case though you'd be unlucky not to achieve your goals.

PS, is OCing to 2.2 ghz easy with stock 3000+ fan?
    As above, yes it is.

Rave has answerd everything there, id just like to say, if your scared about the overtclocking or w/e just get the 3500+, it's stock is 2.2ghz, and it should reach 2.5ghz if you wanted to clock it later.

i'm just looking for the performance of the 3500+

IMO, it's enough for my future HTPC when i buy a new one when all the dual cores are more accessible.

    darn it, YMMV?

    ............

can someone give me a definitive? i don't like YMMVs.

but if 50% of the time i can achieve 2.2, then i'm cool with those odds

So far the odd is still small, but I think its going to be smaller. 0512, 0515, 0517 was overall the "elite" batch, the 0516 was known as the "bad" batch a while ago, now 0518 onwards are even worse. I think you won't be able to get 20%+ overclock sooner or later, when AMD start to dump those "barely pass OC" Venice into the market for profit.

Some motherboards are easier to overclock than others. I suggest the Asus A8N-E Deluxe. They support the X2's very well and are super easy to overclock.

I've never seen a Venice that wouldn't do at least 2.3GHz on air. You have to know the ins and outs of overclocking certain motherboards though. Many of them have more than a few quirks.

May be I should have bought a X2 instead of my crappy 3000+
How easy are overclocking on the X2? I could afford one but if it doesn't overclock well I would rather not spend the extra

also, no point spending 50 bucks on a good HSF and 50 bucks on the better Mobo when the 3500+ is just 100 buxs more.

Does 2520 at 1.35v and the highest i have seen it go was 42. But just today i was running prime and after a few hours of 100% CPU usage was only at 38 degrees, mobo was 31. Not bad me thinks

I would go for the 3000+ personally, even if it doesnt clock the difference in speed won't be massively great and the differenct in price is just not worth it IMHO. I got a lovely Akasa AK-913 (evo 33) with 2 silent adda fans (well about 22dBa - but cannot really hear them) and i get the temps as above.

I cannot really express how happy i am.

I guess i ordered and bought when i did to get the right cpu and the right batch

there're no more 0517 out there so talking about how good it overclock wouldn't help. If there is one I'll take it but I couldn't find one. And 0518+ are ****.
