Is there any other way of having a "shuttle" sized pc and running all of these new components?

The shuttle has very strong 12V rails for the size of the quoted supply. Do some research and you'll find even the 250/300W version can supply a high end 939 processor, 2 gigs of RAM, DVD, 2 HDDs and 850XT PE.
Here we go: An athlon X2 4200+ and a 7800 GTX in a shuttle SN25P: http://forums.sudhian.com/messagevie...&keyword1=7800
It can, but you could buy a Celeron also. The fact that you can do something does not mean you should. How long do you think that system would last running hard with the PSU at 95% capacity 24/7? What happens if your ambient temps go up 10C on a really hot day?Originally Posted by scotty6435
My setup (although a lot lower power) has been running more-or-less 24/7 for 9 months now without a single problem. Unless you're running a huge 600W+ PSU then it's going to be straining the 12V rails just as much as the shuttle's little PSU. Once again, the shuttle PSU is very strong and able to cope with a lot of c**p and can be run very hot. I've only ever heard of the old ACHME PSUs giving up under load due to poor quality capacitors on the board.
EDIT: Besides, how boring would it be to only use older kit in a new top-performance rig?
Don't know what that means but whatever floats your boat.Originally Posted by scotty6435
All power supplies die if you use them long enough. A Shuttle with an X2 and a 7800GTX will put a huge amount of stress on the PSU. Airflow through a Shuttle is not exactly amazing, so again I highly recommend not going the Shuttle route for an X2 rig.
If not the shuttle route then could I still make a small, quiet pc of my own.

The X2 requires no more output power from the PSU than an equivalent single-core processor. The 7800 GTX requires less output power than a 6800 Ultra or Radeon X850 XT PE (although not by very much, in the order of single watts).
Given a Shuttle that's happy running something like a 6800 GT and an FX, of which there are a few, you can run an X2 and 7800 GTX in there too.
Shuttle's weak link is their PSU though, which has a propensity for popping rather than shutting down, when loaded too much.
MOLLY AND POPPY!
So I could use a 7800 and X2 in a SN25P then? I will just have to try it out, I have no intention of o/c it or having more than one HDD in there. I am willing to add blowholes though.

You should be just fine, providing you don't keep the system in an airing cupboard or in the oven
That's providing Shuttle have dual-core support for that XPC, too.

At stock Rys is correct about the temps, but if you overclock and add volts (which you must do to overclock an X2 substantially) they really throw out some heat. Depending on the model it's like overclocking two A64 3500+ to 4000+ chips in the same heat spreader. Doesn't take much imagination to figure out that these puppies demand a lot of power when overclocked.
I never said you couldn't do it, just that it's not recommended if you want to take the most advantage of an X2/7800GTX system.
Wedge, I'll have the PC in my sig up and running tomorrow (thursday) night, if you wanna wait I'll give you feedback on having the X2 and 7800 in the Shuttle SN25P, along with the other bits before you go ahead if you wish,
