I took out an HD with XP Pro on one partition and my My Documents on another (+ other partitions) and put it in a caddy, when trying to access my My Documents I get access denied - how can I get round this?

Right click on the folder, go to properties, then security, click Advanced, go to the Owner tab and tick the box to replace owner. Apply, OK etc.
away from home atm but iirc it wouldn't let me change anything under security or permissions e.t.c.
It won't until you take ownership of the folder and subfolders. Do that first. Then you can set whatever perms you want.

Best hope you haven't encrypted any files BTW or they're gone.
Nope, just move them to a fat32 partion and the encryption gets removed iirc
Errrr...copying requires "read" perms. Which he hasn't got. And moving requires read & modify. Which he hasn't got. He HAS to take ownership of the files and folders before he can do anything with them.
You have to be the original owner with the right password so you've got the right key to decrypt the files, though...Quote:

just gone into tools and options and got security and customise now, but I can't edit anything in there
