In the same way a man with 2 wooden legs can be said to have a pair of legs, my cpu has 2 logical cores. It might not be an accurate description but thats how we label that feature of my processor.

Edit: Look, just send me one of your many X2 cpus and ill drop the argument and pretend intel never existed. Deal?

What is a core if not an execution unit?

Thank you, and its not like the cores are physically seperated on X2 processors either.

Well either you or Intel are full of crap (my money's on you), because Intel disagrees with you guys.

    Might want to read this?

How is that disagreeing? Dual core is a common name for a chip with two physical cores, that doesn't mean calling HT two logical cores is invalid.

Intel calls HT "two logical processors", which is pretty damn close to calling it "two logical cores", isn't it? Or would you say cores and processors are not the same thing?

    For reference:

Intel was only referring to how HT looks to the OS, not about the CPU's physical architecture.

If Intel considered HT and dual cores the same thing they would not have had made the distinctions they have made. HT is nothing like dual core and you should be ashamed of yourselves for having nothing better to do than to try to make a point that you don't even believe yourselves. Shame on you!

Well of course they are, that's why it's "logical", they're talking about the same thing we are - how it appears to software. This whole thing started from a discussion of prime95, software, not a discussion of the hardware of processors.

You should be ashamed of yourself for sticking with a blatently incorrect viewpoint even when you know you are wrong and backed into a corner. Try to take it with good grace, people might actually respect you then.

I'm not here for respect so you can keep it. I'm also not here to have a pissing contest with you just because you are bored out of your mind. You go ahead and knock yourselves out though. This thread has gone on far too long for my liking.

Why not? All you seem to do on these forums is attempt to belittle other people. I'd have thought this thread would be right up your alley.

You make yourself little with pointless posts. You can't blame that on me.

The 486 DX-33 in my basement has more than one execution unit, it's not a multi-core processor.

A core is a fully functioning CPU.

Pentium 4s have another set of execution units made to look like another cpu, but it shares the same pipeline, bus, and everything else with the primary set. Only the ALUs, FPUs, and some registers are duplicated.

Hmm, no they don't. The whole point of hyperthreading is that the execution units are shared between two threads, allowing for more parallelism without significant extra silicon. HT CPUs have a second set of registers and state for the second thread, but they do not have additional ALUs or FPUs.

You are intolerable at times Storm. The whole point of our argument was not saying my archaic processor is anything like a modern dual core processor. You dont need to get defensive because im not saying anything angainst yor shiny new toys.

If any one cares my temperatures are fine and everything is behaving normally and i am happily running two threads at once.
