Burning a CD

Why does my system grind to a halt when performing this seemingly normal task?

It only does it sometimes, when I'm burning at 24x with FantomCD the rest of my system goes incredibly slowly

Any ideas?

i can burn a cd full of music at 48x while doing everything si normally do

I can, well used to, be able to burn stuff at full speed and do other things flawlessly.

I just tried Nero as well. Slows down too. Wierd...

well as you know i lost the ability to burn cd's at all a while back, full format and i can burn em again, maybe that would help as a last resort

Yeah I'm planning on formatting sometime in the near future anyway. Machine is running quite crappily.

Most common cause is PIO mode as opposed to UDMA, UDMA hardly uses any resources and hardly uses the CPU at all (at least compared to PIO).

Also look to mobo drivers (for better IDE support) or prteferably put the (main?) HD and CDRW on seperate channels, if you burn from CD to CD put the CD drives on diff channels but with these fast writers it's better to burn an image to the HD first anyway. You should also defrag, scandisk, ensure HD has enough free space (1GB+ min?) ... Finally try diff media, it is uncommon but sometimes the drive and medium combination can simply be unlucky.

pio = cpu moves all the data around (SLOW!!!)
udma = the drive can use the DMA controler to read and write straight to ram (noticable but not annoying cpu usage)
sata/scsi = dedicated controler thingy that does almost everything over pci bus (very low cpu usage)

its definatly caused by pio mode.. some cdrws only support pio some support both pio and udma and scsi aint needed for a cd-rw.... assuming ur comp dont slow down when using ur hdd then i'll assume u got right drivers etc... ull need to goto bios and try to force udma if it has the option, which it probly dont... make sure ur using an ata33/66/100/133 cable or u might not b able to use udma, and it *should* auto detect it if it can as a udma drive.

best to have ur hdd's as primary, preferably with every thing on its own chan (mine is

) but if u cant then share a chan and stick ur cd-rw as slave with the drive that is used least while burning stuf so it gets most b/w...

Hard drive is on one channel
DVD and CDRW are on another

Not PIO mode.
It's only started recently

Try the drive in another PC, see what happens ... could be the drive failing or something as simple as a problem with the lead. Have you had your case open recently?

how do you change the burn mode from pio to udma?

I think my cd-rw is using pio as i basically cant do anything else when im burning a cd/

Cheers howard, that helped. Before i had to leave the pc to burn a cd. Always wondered why.
