Question What components for new build?

    Hi,
I reckon its about time to start building a new rig, but since I built the last one its all got much more complicated, if possible if I describe what I'm trying to do can I get some help on what componenets would be compatible and are good?

Anyway here goes, Im looking to build an
AMD 64 gaming system (What processor would I get ?)
    2GB Memory
    What motherboard?
I have a x800xt AGP card can I get a dual AGP/PCI express motherboard so I can upgrade to PCI express later?
What HD - Raptor or other?
I have an Antec P160 but is there a bwtter one now?
What PSU (I have 550W CWT but its too noisy)
I can figure out what cooling to get but any suggestions would be welcome.

    Budget is about £800

    thanks for any help
    cheers

    Really - where?

Why do people like you feel the need to post utterly useless comments like that, I can see the other threads and they are all like mine only they have specifics to them included, like mine above,

if you don't want to respond in any positive way then don't respond at all....

If someone makes a courteous post why can't you treat them the same way instead of the geeky "if you don't know don't speak Geek statement" which occurs in many techie boards...thats why I posted here you didn't used to get this in Hexus..........

All I wanted was some ideas and you've turned it into a stupid "use search" thread, I've already built one system as in my sig ...

umm... well, it seems a little harsh asking you to flip thru hundreds of threads...

so I'll let u in on some insights b4 u venture into more technical questions..

800 quids... thats alot to juice.. u cud spend it on tons of high end stuff.. but I'd stick with the following...

    CPU: 3700+ SD OEM -- £200
    Cooler: XP-120 / XP-90C + Panaflo -- £45
    or Gigabyte Rocket GT -- £24 or Venus 12 -- £25
    Mobo: PCI-E AN8 (SLi non Fatality) -- £100 (U'd have to scrap that X800XT)
    AGP ASUS A8V (K8T800) -- £59.44
AGP Abit AV8 3rd Eye (My personal fav) -- £69.88
    AGP MSI K8T Neo2 FIR -- £70 odd
    Mem: 2x1024 Corsair TwinX 3200 C2PT -- £188
PSU: Anything with the name ENERMAX on it... ehehe.. AFAIK
    GFX (PCI-E): 7800GTX -- £380

= Total If you're sticking with AGP.. £480 odd with cash for a nice case and some awsome case cooling...
= Total if you're going for PCI-E.. £800 odd with just enuf to buy u a pint of carling...

I went back a page or 2 and found at least 3-4 of the same thing posted.

Basically its about knowing where to look and actually thinking rather than relying on other people too. It wasn't 'useless', I was making a comment that there are lots of posts like this...you just need to use your eyes and look

Sawyen - Thanks thats exactly what I was looking for at least now I can search on those components and see what they are - this gives me a start....

I didn't realise PCI-E was soo expensive tho still at least I have a PCI-E spec to go on, I'll have a go with that apparently its the future!

Your lalalala rig is actualyl close to what I was thinking of - good guide

    thanks again
    cheers

cheers m8, TBH 3500+ is a mighty CPU but it lacks the extra 512KB of L2 to smoothen out the plunges in fps when u rig games at 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 wif all the eye-candies at 4xAA and 16xAF... There's a thread that discusses the importance of L2 cache in contrast to outright MHz performance... you could trail it out once you have the time.

3700+ SD is the cheapest of the bunch of 939 that offers 1MB L2.. and I have personally seen how rediculously smooth far cry can get without the slightest hiccup on fps on the pier map.

Anyhow, if you really going for a cheaper venice, I coudn't recommend more than a 3500+... stocks very fast with plenty of head room for OC. AV8 itself also treats you into some of the most comprehensive uGURU tweaks and its a mighty stable board even at 295MHz HTT.... Highest I've seen on any AGP board.. However, many people may crucify me with a MSI KT8 Neo2 FIR for the best OC board on AGP.. ehehehe...

3700+ SD this sounds good Ill spec some out tonight - is that a 939 socket set by any chnace? ie. the board type that I need to get? That was the one thing that was complicated in the first place last time

AV8 all the way my current IC7 MAX3 has been superb in the last 2 yeasr - not a glitch

I think Ill go for SATA system as well I'll take a look and see if that board supports it - (must do I reckon)

    cheers m8

the socket being set... well.. at least for all the 64, FX and X2 series.. The new cores will probably use new sockets that'll fix enuf pin interface for AMD's new DDR2 memory controller.

Not sure, they might end up going like the Semprons that support socket A's... and track backwards to 939s... Having said that.. you're probably safe for another year or so for the socket side of things.

As for the graphic interface, I went for AV8 cs I had too much love for my AGP 6800GT.. ehehe... and I wanted a board that will go the distance when overclocked. I presume you know the AV8 is an AGP board?

SATA, AV8 only allows 2 RAIDs, add on cards will only slow things down... Anyhow, SATA will probably rip thru ur HTT counter like a knife thru tofu... Had my Spinpoint up during overclock, couldnt even post past the RAID tool at 270MHz HTT... thats why I turn it off whenever I play games (refer to my sig).. and leave it all to my trusty 80GB IDE...
