Thermalright XP120 v XP90

I cant use the XP120 cos of my mobo (DFI Lanparty Ultra D)
I lose the first PCI E slot, so.....................

Whats different about these 2 products, one is copper one is aluminum, also I cant find anywhere to check if the XP90 will fit my mobo without blocking anything.

Which brings me to the last question, I dont really want to have to take out the mobo and remount with the backplate as I had some stability probs last time, if I buy the xp90 will I have to do this ?

XP-120 is aluminium & takes upto a 120mm fan.
XP-90 is aluminium & takes upto a 92mm fan
XP-90C is copper & takes upto a 92mm fan

Thermalright say that they don't know of any K8 board the XP-90 doesn't fit.

Should use the same mountings afaik so if you are using the 120 already I don't think so.

i have the XP-90 and its an excellent cooler which shouldnt need a remounting of the backplate.

even in this weather my temps have hardly moved from about 38C idle to around 42 load (3400 at stock).

i definately recommend it.

All the Thermalright stuff is good but it's overkill if you are not overclocking a lot. The XP-120 is mean't for a heavy cooling job. If you are only mildly overclocking (or not at all) don't get the Thermalright stuff as it won't help you.

The XP120 fits the DFI NF4 fine and tbh are you using the first PCIe slot at all? I know I didn't and I know I wasn't going to because PCIe cards other then graphics are like the perverbial hens teeth

The XP-120 really isn't that heavy it's all aluminium after all.

Id just get a XP90c. There nice sinks, and you might end up wanting to overclock later. No harm in keeping your CPu nice and cool, don't skimp on a heatsink.

at the moment I'm using the stock heasink and cooler, so what I'm trying to find out is do I need to remove my mobo to fit a backplate for this cooler or does it fit onto the standard one?

The reason I'm not going for the Xp120 is apparently you lose the first pci e slot on the dfi ultra d board and that pci slot is quicker than the other?

On the dfi nf4 boards the slots go something like this*:

pci-e 4x
pci-e 16x
pci-e 8x
pci
pci

The first slot is not usefull for anything. ATM you can only get graphics cards in pci-e and they fit nicely on the 16x and the 8x. You will not need to use the first slot for a long time.

*Those speeds are maximuim and cant all be set like that at the same time.


For the backplate*, you will find it easyer if there is a hole behind it in your mobo tray but if not doesnt matter... just mnake sure you dont push the nuts out of the backplate when screwing it down.

Assuming you need to remove the front part that the stock cooler would normally sit on.

There are 3x pci-E, so yours is in the second

Not sure if the first can be used for gfx but I dont see any reson why not. The connector would need modding to make it open ended - like the connectors used on other boards for the second card.

I did see the pics but wasnt sure, there is a deffo loss of performance by not using the correct pcie slot I've heard, nothing major but about a couple of 100 point loss on 3dmark if you use the 2nd pci slot.

after reading on dfi street if you do use this the pci e only runs at 2x-4x unless you change the jumpers so both pci-e run at 8x (which should be enough for current GPUs I would have thought)

as I'm a gamer this means alot to me, going to go for the xp90c just for compatability reasons

its a PCIe 1x slot at the top and there are no commercial cards that I have seen for them yet.

The folded bit is off a arctic cooling thingy

The XP90C will prob do better anyway but the XP120 fits fine and it uses the first VGA PCIe
