    Hitachi Deskstar Hard drives?

    Hello,

Thinking about getting a new HD - are the new Hitachi Deskstar hard drives quiet? (say as quiet as Samsung drives?) and has anyone tried them - does anyone know if Hitachi have fixed the problems IBM used to have with the 'Deathstars'?

    Thanks

    Josh

PS - Are samsung drives still generally held to be the quietest?

The larger ones are known to get hot, the 7k500 get up to around 52C.

So as long as you have adequate cooling u should be OK on that side.

not sure about noise levels tho.

I'm currently running 2 160g sata 7k250's in raid 0. I did a bit of research as everyone is aware of the dreaded deathstars before buying early this year. They are certainly quick and quiet. The only spinpoint I have is an older 80g ide. The hitachis are quieter than this but obviously things have moved on.

Look at http://www.storagereview.com/. When I bought mine the 7k250's looked like the best deal for speed quietness and reliability - Price was competitive too.

I'm 100% certain that problems have been ironed out. I certainly wouldn't run them in raid 0 without confidence. I said on these forums I'd eat my hat if they died early

    i run a 7K250 250gb hitachi.

its just great, doesnt seem to run hot either.

Also its extremely quiet and fast (dumps me into bf2 games faster than the vast majority of people, despite only having 1gb of ram)

In my experience deskstars are and have always been very quiet. Heat is pritty average.
