    Sata ports and overclocking

just got my hands on a nforce3 neo plat. its got a pci/agp lock on it but it doesnt work on sata ports 1 or 2. am i able to run a primary hard drive )with OS on it) from sata ports 3 or 4 whilst still keeping the lock there to enable me to overclock the board? or does it HAVE to go on channel 1 in order to boot up?

sorry im new to sata stuff.

The AGP/PCI lock shouldn't have anything todo with the SATA, SATA is controlled by its own chip and your bios should have an option to disable it.

Just connect SATA to any port and it should work anyway, on the boot up you should see the SATA detection come up.

You can install an OS to a SATA drive, but you either need to remake the Install CD, look for guides to show you how.

    Or use a floppy.

thanks for that, i understand about installing the drivers for sata.
ive just read that in order to get a working pci/agp lock on the msi neo plat you cant use channels 1 or 2 as they dont lock and can cause stability issues when overclocked.
but in the same article it said using 3 and 4 is ok, i just didnt know if you could boot from them.

Ahhh yes the infmamous NF3 SATA issue

For some reason ports 3 and 4 are locked by the AGP/PCI lock but the 1+2 aren't!

I had this problem on a DFI NF3-250 and used ports 3 and 4 for RAID'd raptors and a SiL3112a SATA card for my data HDD. With this setup I hit 325MHz HTT 1:1

Are you talking about the Neo2 (S939) or the Neo (S754)?

If it's the S939, to answer your question...YES...you must run on ports 3 and 4, and there are many other quirks with that board as well.

    Read this...

Haven't run the S754 but could very well be the same.

It's a chipset issue & all nForce3 boards are the same (some mfrs didn't even impliment 4 SATA connections because of this but just the 2 locked ones)

Doubt that will be a problem - you will probably get 2.4GHz or maybe more.

wow, ive read people getting that, but i dont watercool so ive got to use air for now.
is there any dummy guides around for overclocking a 64 cpu?
all this fsb/htt/multi stuff isnt half as simplistic as the older ways.
