KD7, XP2400, USB and Alpha PAL 8045.

Just got a small upgrade to an XP2400 and an ABit KD7 curtsey of the Wanted forum and I have a few questions which Mr Google does not seem to be able to answer.

The KD7 is supplying power to all my USB devices even when powered down. Is there anyway to stop this other than to unplug my computer?

My current CPU heat sink is an Alpha PAL 8045. Do people think this heat sink will be suitable?

I am tempted to go water cooling as I would like to OC this chip a little. If I did, is my Alpha PAL 8045 worth anything?

Wow, i haven't heard of someone else using an alpha for a long while!
(i'm running an XP2600 under mine, solid as a rock, so it'll be fine for what you want it for)

They used to go for about £30, i really don't know about now... You'll have to ask these knowledgeable guys.

but then if you were selling it, i'd be interested for my second rig.

My 8045 is cooling my 3000+ in a very nice way (around 38 degrees) :). Their still a beast of a heatsink.

As for the mobo, i dont know why its doing that. Mine doest.

There should be a jumper on most mobos for the usb power, it would probably say in the manual..

If not, remove the 5v_sb pin from the atx connector and insulate it so it cant short on your case etc... Its the purple one I think /me googles.. http://xtronics.com/reference/atx_pinout.htm
Colours can vary with psus so check its pin9 on yours.

I'm overclocking a 2500+ barton with my Alpha PAL 8045 at 11x200 from 11x166 and 1.725volts which so far hasn't been a problem. Can't remember the temps but at the time I must have thought it was OK. It's not a noisey fan either so probably fairly low rpm with the temps a little on the high side.

Nice to find I’m not the only person still using an Alpha PAL :) I am not overly happy with the temps so far. It has been very warm. I may have applied too much/little Arctic Silver.

I have also noticed the KD7 gives a core CPU temp and a surface CPU. I assume I should be more concerned with the core temps?

I cannot see any related jumpers on the board or in the manual. In the BIOS “Resume by OnChip USB” is disabled. I have not fiddled with many of the BIOS settings so they are pretty much all default.

There wont be a setting for it in bios.

If theres a jumper, it would likley be either near the keyboard connector OR neer the atx conenctor.

The board runs compleatly from the 5v_stand_by line when it is off so disconnecting it should fix the problem.

Hmm, I realise I am not getting anything out of the right channel ... what does this remind me off ... ah yes when headphones are not plugged in properly. So I plug my headphones directly in to the PC and they are fine. I must have checked to PC end of the jack cable several time, but not the amp end, d'oh, it was half out. :Oops: :lol:

As for the vocal echo ... that was my choice of test track, The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now, should have stuck with System of a Down.:rockon:
