Simple yes or no - is it worth shelling out a fortune for RAM other than for benching?

No. Not that I've noticed. (unless you overclock).

Most CL3 ram that I have seen is stable at 2.5 too, even when overclocked.

I have used all kinds of RAM, and the G.Skill LA that I last had was awsome. The difference between 200fsb and 300fsb is amazing, but with this stuff I was getting 2.5-4-3-7 @ 300fsb was another world of difference.

If you have the money and the ability to overclock with your hardware I would highly recommend buying some nice G.SKill or anyother brand that can do that kind of fsb/timings.

Higher processor/fsb makes the world of difference. From my experience in real world terms the latency does not.

I have heard it to be much more important on A64 systems than intel, but i wouldnt be able to tell you by how much.

Well thats bollocks. A64's are the least sensitive to latency and bandwith.

It depends on the game and your settings and graphics card. The simple answer is, probably not.

There are situations that can arise during gaming where having lower latency high speed memory can dramatically increase your minimum framrates, but generally high speed memory is of more value to extreme overclockers who live for benching.

i'm sorry to stick my oar in here but latency does have about a 2 to 10 percent advantage ofer very loose latency ram depending upon the application used. this is especially true for the A64's as mentioned by Scarlet Infidel as it allows an even lower access time to the ram.

it is however the FSB that gives you the best boost but if you can combine the two then you can get an extreme boost. this is where you need better quality and thus more expensive ram.
