Motherboard + PSU -- what do I want?

    Hi,

I have now got all the parts for the Shuttle SN25P as listed in my signature, but as you may know, SN25P + A64 X2 = BIG problems.

So I think I'm gonna just get a smallish tower and a few more PCI cards and disk drives etc...

So what motherboard should I be after? Has to do all the latest bits and bobs, and obviously a PSU as well! Any pointers? Has to be good ones though to match my system!

And I'll be wanting all of the following:

    SKT939
    SATA RAID
    PCIe
    Dual Channel
Onboard Sound (Or should I get a PCI solution?)
    blah blah

I'll be able to sort myself out a case I think!!

SATA cables x3, 2 will come with whatever mobo you buy, same goes for ide cables (for cd) As far as boards go, i think theyre pretty much all a bit crap, the only one i know of that has x2 support is dfi nforce4s, but they are pricey although i suppose with an x2 thats not too much of an issue.

Youll also need a power supply, but im not really up on them anymore, as i tend to only keep up with things like that when im after buying one. You will want a good one from a well known brand, id reccomend reading the sticky in the psu forum www.hardforum.com for good info.

You should be set for fans, but you might want a few more to suit whatever case you choose, i would reccomend either a silverstone or lian li for mid tower, coolermaster stacker if you want a proper case.

For PSUs, I would recommend a Tagan 480W - I've been running one for a while, and it hasn't blown up yet, and it should last you a while.

My gfx card has a 2 molex (2x 4x1) to PCI (the 2x3 one) connection adaptor thingy. so I think that's probably good.

Ok, a bit of research has got me to the following options:

    MSI K8N Diamond/SLi £125
    ABit Fatal1ty AN8 SLi £120
    GigaByte GA-K8NXP-SLI £115
    DFI LanParty nF4 SLi-DR £140
    Asus A8N-Sli Premium £130

Is the most expensive the best? Am I right to be looking at the SLi boards, even though I don't think I can quite afford another 7800 yet...

Basically after whatever is the best, it will last about a year with the system getting £500-£1000 upgrades after 4 and 8 months so anybody have any views on where I should be starting?

Another question, is that a lot of the boards claim the 3rd PCI slot is reserved for this or that, does it actually matter, can you have any 3 PCI cards you want? I think it's highly likely I will have 3 in there, well immediately a TV card and a PCMCIA Adaptor and will probably find something else, such as extra USB ports etc...

Do any motherboards in this range allow for more than 2 Disk Drives? I would be keen to put in as many as it will let me, but probably IDE drives, am I missing something?

On PSUs, is it agreed that I should be going for the Tagan 2Force 580W one?

    Thank you for all advice!

Out of those id have either the DFI or the ABit, SLI is worth it if you can afford it, cos then at least you have the option of going sli later, If youre getting teh DFI make sure to check out dfi street, they have all sorts of info on how to get it set up best.

DFI has 8 sata ports 4 unlocked, and 2 ide ports so youll max out at 14 drives there.
Edit: Oh but only 2 pci slots, but youre set on the usb front as i believe it supports 12.

So is there any sensible way to put more than one Disk Drive in? I just can't believe there isn't!
