Ive noticed one of my maxtor hdd's has started clicking recently, random timing, and usually twice then back to normal. Sounds like the heads being relased from park.
I will be quite annoyed if they die, anything I can do to prevent it?
Definatly not buying any more maxtors (this will be the 3rd failure out of maybe 8-10 drives!)
The clicking is normally the resetting of the heads in response to expansion/contraction form changing temperatures. For some drives it seems to proceede their death but for others it's totaly normal.
I have drives that have clicked from day 1 and are running fine after 5 years or more. Not the maxtors though...those are dead, but it could be an isolated incident.

One of my HD died two days after I encountered an issue similar to what you've described =/
I had a Maxtor that made clicky sounds and generally became v.noisy. Died yesterday.

I would personally never, ever use a clunking/clicking hard disc. If I had one that clicked from day 1 I would have taken it back to the shop for an exchange. Backup, now!
I had a maxtor once, clicked away form day one but got very loud close to death. Never again. Even the name, Maxtor, sounds lame.
Hehe, and I am still deciding between the Maxtor and Hitachi for my next "huge drive". Some may still be quick to point that Hitachi -> IBM -> Deathstar, but I still think that this is all kinda luck.
I've also had a WD fail. My SCSI Seagate lasted way past its warranty, but I've never really thought of getting their IDE/SATA drives as they've, as far as I recall, never really been performance leaders outside the SCSI market.
Nah - hitachi improved the "deathstar". AFAIK, they don't use the same manufacturing technique as IBM did with that ill fated range a few years ago.
We buy loads of those (occasionally western digi and seagate too)
Thats why I've bought from Hitachi before, and still will. If the price per GB is competitive with Maxtor.
Mind ya, I've also had an Hitachi fail before, but I'd say those are very much hit or miss. What I know however is that the RMA is -much- more efficient with the Hitachi than WD. For Hitachi, I only had to send it somewhere south in the UK, whereas for WD, I had to send to Germany. And the whole replacement was much quicker with Hitachi as well (days vs weeks). Not sure how good Maxtor is with their RMA (obviously, its trouble I'd rather not go through at all - but it happens).
Even more problems.
I told my brother of the clicking and asked if it had happended before on his.. nope.. he walks off to his room and turns on his pc - but boot drive is corrupt. He spent about 6 hours reinstalling windows and backing it up, so going to send it back tomorrow.
The reson we think his died is the repetitive switching on/off required for his dodgy watercooling pump (Laing DDC) to start - so its also going back tomorrow. It starts about 1/4 of the time usually, but even then, its no reson for a hdd to just die. the corruption makes me thing head/platter collision?
I really hate maxtors!
I got really scared my harddrives where making a noise the other day, but it turned out to be a sample on the massive attack song i was listeing to. Scary stuff.
The Dimond max 10 harddrives seem to get nothing but good reviews. Ive got a 80gb maxtor in my old gatway pc, which works fine, slow but fine. Not as good as Samsing or Seagate.

Well, gota give credit where its due.
The Maxtor drive with NCQ does very well, especially in desktop applications.
I wonder how the Hitachi with NCQ would perform though. They've not added tested that yet.
Urmm, my 400Gig Hitachi is sitting here making clicking noises, I'm worried
A few a second I suppose, right now it's being downloaded to, but less often when it's idle.
Am I right to be worried? I have no idea if it has always been doing this or not....
