what menu do i need to go into on the BIOS to overclock?? couldnt find it just now
Asus A8N-SLi Premium
Or do i need to use the utilities on the CD?
personally i like to keep full load temps under about 50*c
for me 48*c would proberly be a max else i would fell like im keeping it too toasty warm...
they can handle 60*-70*c although it's not realy adviced
Do you oc in the bios or with that utility on the asus cd?
Idle temps dont mean anything, what load temps are you getting? 60c is a safe maximium for upto 1.6v on most amd64 (winchesters anyway).
You can use either bios or windows apps, but the ones on the cd are likely to be crap. I use systool but there are others.
If your overclockign memory, that needs to be done with the bios and memtest86 or you could easly corrupt your windows install.
To overclock cpu from windows you either need unlocked multiplyers (only on fx 5x cpus) or you need to keep your ram at known stable speeds (if you havent overclocked mem, then just keep it below 200mhz).
I only got the cpu yesterday so i'm only going to adjust it slightly and then step it up.
Currently its at stick 2.2, i did turn it up to 2.3 but only for 2-3 mins and then put it back to stock until i get all my software installed.
At the moment in the Ai Boost (clocking software with the asus mobo) its set to auto. Funny thing was though this morning when i was copying from my external disk to my hard drive, i got the "blue screen of death" twice. I'm at work now so i can comment if its ok or not. Do you think this might have something to do with me clocking it? But i have put it back to defuat. Temps are 33 idle 39 max.
If i need to reset what i may have done will removing the cpu, turning it on to get the beeps and then "reseating" the cpu set it all back to defualt?
many thnaks guys for all your help
Darren
one other quick question.......can you oc the cpu in the bios then?
Asus mobos can be overclocked through the BIOS.
But I've never found a good Asus motherboard for overclocking, they are generally restrictive. But they are great for stability.
Your temps seem to be fine, 50C is bottom end of hot and most AMDs run upto 70C fine.
Could you tell me what menu i should be going into to oc in the BIOS.....Im a computer engineer and i couldnt even find it myself........i must be blind!!!!!!!!
On mine its "Jumper free configuration" for the CPU.
And for my Ram its under another menu, you'll see "Memory Configuration"
Ahh right, i remember seeing that menu.....i assumed that it was something to do with the IDE setup.....silly me.
Ok cheers for that.
Dougal when it comes to restting what i've done all i need to do right is load defualts in bios then?
Yes.
Sometimes tho you'll need to reflash the BIOS using the crash free recovery if it all goes wrong.
So make sure you have a copy of your currently installed BIOS on cd and renamed appropriately, should be something like "A8N***.rom" prob "A8NSLIDX.ROM" as my K8V SE Deluxe one is "K8VSEDX.ROM"
Does the Crash recovery come with the Asus cd?
Sorry to ask all these questions, have not had a chance to look at the asus cd in detail
The crash recovery is inbuilt to the BIOS chip. If something major has gone wrong it will automatically come up and prompt you for a floppy or CD containing the BIOS untill you turn it off.
ok thanks for your help. once i get home tonight i'll post up my situation then, it might be ok now?

If you just chose wrong settings (ram timings for example) so it cant POST then you should just reset the CMOS by a jumper on the mobo. You need to unplug the psu to do that, read your manual first!
