im looking to buy a new motherboard and chip amd for overclocking just wanted to know what you guys thaught i have corsair ram and a 480 watt thermaltake psu

Just to elaborate for the CPU the choices are any TbredB (yes even XP1700+ so long as it is TbredB) or any Barton (slowest and cheapest being the XP2500+). These tend to hit XP3000+ to XP3200+ speeds on average, many get higher esp if you raise the voltage above the normal for these type of CPUs (1.65v). That means your £40-70 CPU can easily be turned into a £350 CPU.

For the mobo any mobo capable of 400FSB is what you need, nForce2 are the chipset of choice and no longer hold a price premium making them the clear choice. nForce2 often come with Dual Channel ability which adds 5%ish in perf by simply using 2 sticks of RAM (ideally same brand, size and type). Another very useful thing nForce2 CAN come with is nVidia's wonderful audio solution known as MCP-T or Soundstorm (vs the bog std MCP). Top picks for nForce2 are Asus A7N8X Deluxe and Abit NF7-S but any nForce2 (no IGP) should more than do, they start from as little as £40 ( www.dabs.com ) albeit without Dual Channel ability.

Rem there's more to a good o/c, namely cooling (Volcano 11+ is cheap £15 Dabs), you already have the RAM (I'm assuming it's at least PC3200). Rem for gaming the gfx card is by far the most crucial part, GF4TI4200 is great for the price, Rad9600PRO is best bang (considering future-proofing) while Rad9700-9800 are the top ones to get without breaking the bank.

Any 9700 (£150?) or a 9800nonPRO (£200?) are absolute bargains compared to the 9800PRO (£270), 9800XT (£300-350?) and the GF-FX5900 series (std £230, ultra £300-350). Straining the bank sure, but break ... probably not. Stock the 9700nonPRO is way ahead of the 9600PRO and 9800SE, and 9700nonPRO tend to o/c beyond the 9700PRO and 9800nonPRO ... great ... if you can find them!
