hi
can i have an sli supported mobo and not use sli?
i.e. can i use a single pci-e g/card with the option of sli later on if needs be?
is it worth it and what do i lose by having the extra pci bays?

Yes.
You can do, but the cards need to be exactly matched down to the BIOS.
If you do decide to go to it in the future and you can get another card it is worth it, but the new ATi stuff is coming out soonish.

ok. so if i get an sli board, same as a none sli by same manufacturer etc but cheaper, i can then get say an ati or nvidia card and add another different card later?
such as a sapphire 6600gt matched to an asus 6600gt or ati equivalent?
