New printer needed - Espon CX5200 stopped printing after cartridge change

My Epson CX5200 all-in-one inkjet has failed. It's out of its warranty period and I replaced the cartridges for the first time with genuine Epson cartridges (the old ones were down to between 10% and 30% ink remaining so were not completely exhausted). Now it does not print anything but the print head sounds as if it is printing. Having Google'd for the problem it appears that the Epson CX5200 and CX5400 are renowned for completely failing after the ink cartridges are replaced.

So, it's unlikely Epson UK will offer me anything even though there is a known problem with these printers as i'm out of warranty and, to make things worse, i've wasted £50 on new Epson cartridges.

I'm looking for a new workhorse printer. It needs to be an all-in-one and have a USB 2.0 hi-speed connection. It also needs to be flexible (memory card reader, PictBridge, DirectPrint options would be useful). Ink cartridges should be pretty economical and a decent sized paper tray and reasonable fast printing speed are also required. I'm not too bothered about photo printing as i've already got a dedicated photo printer but the ability to print A4 photos could be useful.

I'm a bit cheesed off with Epson at the moment and would probably opt for a HP printer rather than an Epson. So, any recommendations? The irony of all this is that i've got an old Epson Stylus Photo 750 that has lasted many years and is still going strong even after at least a dozen cartridge changes and hundreds of A4 photos being printed on it. They sure don't seem to make them like they used to!

just on the off chance you should get in touch with epson and if you are lucky they might fix/exchange the printer for free.

if not then just buy 1 of the canon pixma mp multifunction printers, cant go wrong with them tbh

I got in touch with Epson. They denied any knowledge of a known fault with this printer until I started reading out the URL's of Web sites (some run by Epson Authorised Dealers!). They then referred me to an Epson Service Centre. I phoned the Service Centre and they said tough as I was out of my warranty period. He quoted me a minimum of £100 to repair the problem. I declined, hence, a hardly-used Epson CX5200 and £50+ worth of genuine Epson ink cartridges have now been assigned to my bin.

I've got my dad's HP PSC 2355 on loan until I buy a replacement non-Epson printer of my own. It really sucks that I only got one cartridges worth of life out of a printer and Epson were unwilling to act in good faith upon a known design defect on these printers. They weren't even willing to reimburse me for the Epson cartridges that I had just bought! You live and learn.

Very interesting. I've decided to just take the hit and bin the printer.

Another vote for the Canon Pixma range. Superb quality printers, loads of features and everything. I've babbled on about them before. CBA to type it all out again :-)
