Its a bit low so start the file then turn it up till you can hear it.
It souds funny cause it almost sounds like its playing a beat, but thats the actually ticking/clicking noises i get out of my Seagate 200GB 8mb 7200rpm IDE drive that i run in a silent external enclosure.
I have a seagate drive tools disk but because i have a laptop i can't actually run the application as its a bootable type app
Sounds like its not spinning up properly... that would suggest to me thats its on its way out...
About the disk tool, you should be able to change the boot option on a laptop very easily... just go into the BIOS!

When do you get the noise? When reading/writing, or all the time?
None of my hard drives (three Seagates) make that noise that I can hear - however, I normally can't hear them over the fans anyway! How loud is the noise? e.g. If it were internal, would you be able to hear it (over the fans)?

It kicks in when i leave the drive along for about a half hour. As its on the external caddy as a data drive its not used all that often but out of nowhere (with no input from me) it'll start playing that funky beat and it'll go on for a whole minute or so or until i do something with the drive via explorer.
It otherwise functions just fine. It is only 3 or 4 months old and has been doing this from the first day
And yes, if it was internal you could hear it, it sounds about as loud as....a soft-medium tap with a fingernail on a desk, if that makes sense. Can't think of what to compare it with, but you cannot miss the noise when you have the enclosure on the desktop, it is definitely there and distracting

If it has been okay for all this time then it probably won't be a problem (having said that, it will now blow up in the next twenty four hours). If the noise is annoying you, try e-mailing wherever you bought it from and telling them exactly what the problem is - they might accept an RMA. My drives (two 7200.7s, and, I think, a Barracuda IV) certainly don't make any noise like that that I can hear.
And if your lappy has a CD drive, then try using UBCD - it has a few HDD testing programs on there, and is useful for other things as well. It's just generally a handy thing to have lying around.

You mean can you check a USB hard drive using a standard hard drive checker? Well, there's one way to find out! I should imagine it would be possible, so long as the motherboard has proper support for USB.

If its only doing it after a while it might be spinning down but not doing it properly cos of something funky in the usb controller, can you try it on a normal ide channel and see if it has any problems? Theres a property somewhere in windows to allow it to spin down disks after a while, but i cant recall where it is for the life of me, and it may not even be there for usb disks.
Ok then, i'll transfer it all to a spare samsung and i'll start fresh with the seagate as a system drive in my brother's old desktop, i'll then be able to run the disck check tools and listen out to see if it does the clicking
I think herulach might be on the right track here. It may be trying to go into power save/spin-down but the controller is interuppting it, albeit improperly.

What could i do to test that while its in the enclosure?
You'd need to find software which runs through DOS. And get the (poor) USB drivers for it.

I personally think the sound is coming from the heads, when a time idle they want to go back to their original position, maybe they'r thcking against something?
