    Question Hardware Compatibility Check

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help, I've been asked by a mate to get a list of items for a custom built pc. The primary use of this machine will be for software development purposes, he wants a decent graphics card and for it to be pretty speedy. he's got the software to put on it and just wanted the hardware.

Well long story short I've got a list but I haven't been in the technical loop for ages and I've come up with this list and I needed to know if it would all work together and if I've missed anything..

This is all from ebuyer so I put the part numbers on too..
    Asus K8V-X Socket-754 VIA K8T800 ATX- Sound Gb-Lan USB2 800FSB SATA-Raid Retail Box part no: 074707
AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64bit 3400+ 512kb L2cache 754pin Retail Boxed Processor with 3 Year Warranty and Fan Included part no: 058432
Sony DWQ28AB2 16x16x8x DVDRW OEM Black part no: 092093
    Maxtor 6Y080L0 Plus 9 80GB 7200rpm UDMA133 - OEM part no: 040968
    XFX GeForce FX5200 256MB DDR, AGP8x, DVI, TV-Out - Retail box part no: 054890
Ebuyer AC Power Lead (Kettle Type) Suitable for ATX PSU part no: 020293
Casecom KG-6133 ATX Case in Black with 2.0 USB/Audio and 350w PSU part no: 090877

This is stuff that I'm buying seperately for price purposes..
    19" TFT Monitor with DVI
    2x 512MB PC3200 Elixir DDR SDRAM

(oh and he already has a mouse and keyboard)

    Thanks guys!

My thoughts would be to spend a little extra to get a socket 939 cpu and motherboard with support for PCI-E (so the PCI-E version of the FX5200), and a more powerfull PSU

Socket 939 have a 128-bit, 'dual-channel' memory-controller, whereas socket 754 processors only have a 64-bit, 'single-channel' memory-controller, so you can have much more bandwidth. Also the 939 platform supports PCI-E where the 754 does not.

I think overall, for a little extra cash, you'd have a much more future proof setup that would be easier to upgrade.

Well on Fatboys advice I've chosen the following..

    Sony DWQ28AB2 16x16x8x DVDRW OEM Black 092093
    Maxtor 6Y080L0 Plus 9 80GB 7200rpm UDMA133 - OEM 040968
Ebuyer AC Power Lead (Kettle Type) Suitable for ATX PSU 020293
Casecom KG-6133 ATX Case in Black with 2.0 USB/Audio and 350w PSU 090877
    AMD (Venice) Athlon 64Bit 3000+ Socket 939pin 512k L2cache 90nm Retail Boxed Processor 088105
    Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI Skt939 nForce4 SLI Chipset DDR400 PCI-E USB2.0 LAN SATA Retail Box 084954
    Leadtek WinFast PX6200TC GeForce 6200 PCI-E with TurboCacheā„¢ supporting 256MB with TV-out DVI and Hardware Monitor 085824

19" Arianet Premium Plus with DVI
    512MB PC3200 Elixir DDR SDRAM

Anyone see any slap-worthy problems with this spec??

And I rudely forgot to say thank you to Fatboy
    so thanks!

Get one of the Abit AN8 range if you can, they are excellent boards.
Also, get a SATA drive, not a IDE one.

If your not messing around overclocking etc I would look at possibly getting an OEM CPU, as you can pick up a s939 3200+ OEM for Ā£119.86 from lowestonweb.com - that's what I'm going to order shortly.

    the NF4 s754 are PCI-E

PCI-E and AGP can be on the same board, using the ULi chipset

and there was a graphics card with PCI-E and AGP on it, just flip it over to get the right one

    Seconded hun...

I've just ordered the Maxtor 10 SATA on recommendation.
I've always had ABIT boards and would always recommend.
