Question about NB cooling (pretty urgent!)

My Northbridge fan on my Abit IC7 has died, and although I've sent an email to abit asking for a replacement, they have not (yet - 2 days) replied.

So, I was wondering what NB coolers do you people recommend? I was considering the Zalman one, but apparently it's somewhat outdated now.

My other option is the "Vantec Iceberq VGA & Chipset cooling kit" as from here

However, I'm not sure if it will be ok. It is secribed as a VGA *and* Chipset cooling thing, and it seems that the fan part is for the graphics card, and the pansy heatsink in the picture for the northbridge.

Has anyone got one of these? - or alternatively could suggest a different product?

Hmm. Looks good, but I am slightly concerned on whether it'll fit on the northbridge or not..

Mainly since:
1. The NB of the IC7 looks like an AMD CPU - ie, it's flat and the actual 'die' area is elevated.. The stock heatsink has a thick sticky bit to elevate the heat sink... Or is this sort of design standard now and it'll be fine?

2. The picture seems to show it connecting via a 'screw' type thingy into the motherboard, but the IC7 hasn't got any holes there, rather a sort of 'clip' thing.. So I'm wondering if I'll be able to attach it or not.

Actually, the above refers to all NB coolers I guess...

Ummm you may wanna check your MB as there are no holes for any NB heatsinks other than the original one (hooks) on the IC7 so you will need to drill some if you wanted to use it....

or use thermal pad, or thermal epoxy, north bridges make VERY little amounts of heat ..

i have exactly the same heatsink for my nb, though i had to move it to my 9700np (which makes a LOT more heat, and is overclocked a large amount aswell!) so i put the stock one back on...

my nf7-s rev1.1 has a metal circle on the core, which is lower than the plastic surrounding it, with the vantec cooler my pc was 100% stable even though tehre was only a few mm square of contact area, which was all in the corners.

Intel use the hook system so you'd have to stick the vantec on. The exact same thing happened to my IC7. I bought a Thermaltake Tiger. VERY easy to install, just stick some thermal paste on and then hook it on. Literally a 2 minute job with mobo left in the case.

Seems to be doing a good job on my board.

my MSI KT4 ultra doesnt even have active cooling and I have O/C the bus by a fair bit. I would just look for sommat cheap. they dont get that hot.

Korky, I have that same northbridge cooler, but it's only for AMD boards.

why do you need a NB fan anyway, ive been running my MSI K7N2 delux (NF2 board) for a few months now with the fan unplugged cos the whine was far too anoying. ive overclocked the fsb a fair bit and still no problems...

the canterwood gets damn hot ,and as the ic7 uses a active heatsink it is only designed to cool it down with the fan on ,turn the fan off and the heatsink alone is not big enough to cool it down

i removed my nb cooled on my gigabyte canterwood and replaced it with a gold zalman silent cooler only to find that when i turned my 120mm blowhole fan off the temp on the little bugger hit 60.C and the systm crashed

u might be aswell just "modding" a 80mm fan to blow over the nb while u wait for abit to send u a replacement (tie wraps are ur friend :D )

So anyone know of a good NB Heatsink with NO fan for the "hook" type system like the Tiger ??

My first though was that looks good but at £30 it's almost as much as an SLK800! (Not that you'd be using that to cool the north bridge but you know what I mean!)

Thanks for the input people! Due to most hs/fans not fitting, I've rung OcUK up and they apparently stock replacement abit HS/fans, so one of them should be sent tomorrow :).
