    Uh oh... Something smells...

I'm with Mr Beef, who's CPU has just burnt a hole through itself, and the motherboard, and took out a PSU. The room was smokey, and smelt aweful... This was likely due to the fact that the CPU was OCed from 2.1GHz, to 3.2GHz, and it's only and Athlon XP.

    Pictures to follow...

Pretty much, but it's definately thinner... There was black sticky stuff, and smoke for ages. The room still stinks.

Any ideas what caused it? Could it be the water cooling if there was an airlock?

    Good work, Beef-O!
How long was it running at 3.2 for? And was it stable?

The smell probably comes from the PCB sealant, a lot of manufacturers spray the boards when the base components are done with a lacquer.

    Any non blurry pics?

What voltage was going through it?

Its likely too much voltage + too high mhz resulted in electromigration. Electromigration can either break or short connections in the cpu.

If there was a short between +vcore and ground for example, and enough current got through (cpus eat up 50A+ @1-2v) it would very quickly get VERY hot and probably explode from thermal expansion...

The smell would be the plastic packge of the cpu melting. It looks as if the hole is only the plastic packege, and does not go through the core. I would be suprised if it did - its much more likely to shatter or crack.

Ive seen a chip explode bfore, although it was only a small voltage regulator, it made a very loud bang, bad smell, and got hot enough to glow bright red (900c+ )

It was 1.9v at 240FSB and 54c when it went, didn't make a bang or pop, pc just turned off. The die looks fine.

You need to get some more smoke for it - most electrical stuff runs fine until it starts smoking, so just get some more and put it back in.
