    Memory For New Rig

Hi, Im just assembling my new rig and im coming close to blowing my budget.
I want to save money on the memory for the new rig. I was originally going to get corsair 3200 xms 1 gb stick for £80 shipped, but the price has since gone up.
I want the ram to run at 400-420mhz with if possible, tight timings.
The MB is going to be be a dfi nf4 ultra-d.
What are good memory modules to use with this MB that i can buy for around £70-£85?

    Thanks

Geil value, Corsair value select and Crucial all seem to be fairly popular these days. They all sell for about £70 per gig.

You'll probably want 2x512MB sticks if you want to use dual channel. 1gig sticks usually don't overclock as well, and have higher latencies. Unless you pay more.

menory prices are going up quickly. crucial sells for about £110 a gig checked this morning. this is with the ballistix ram that'll do 250MHz (500 DDR)

on a socket 939 motherboard, it's definately worth buying 2 sticks of ram instead of one (something like 5% performance difference by enabling dual channel memory).

What you should be looking for is CL2 - but I can find them for the money...

How about OCZ premier 3200 512MB(2.5-3-3-7 from ebuyer, quickfind 92091). A pair comes to 75.23 if you're prepared to wait (using free shipping).

I can't vouch for the overclockability of these, but IIRC the DFI boards are fairly happy with any manufacturers chips.

btw - been running ballistix PC4000 from the day they were released.

No problems getting the full 250MHz out of them (at 2.5-3-3-7), but they won't go any higher - at any timings. They run CL2 up to 225MHz quite easily.

Very happy with them for the price.

I understand that dual channel mode will give me a good performance boost, but i plan to have 2gb in total, getting the next module when i get paid. I dont really want to go down the 4x512mb route.
Out of Geil value, Corsair value select and Crucial memory, which one can do cas2 or 2.5 and which would be the best quality, and by that i mean can work the dfi board because i heard its a very picky board.

Also does anyone know what chips are used in these modules (tccd or hynix etc) as they all have similar spec i.e 3-3-3-8.

crucial is all micron chips - don't know about the others.
Their value chips are only specified to CL3, but I'd be fairly sure they'd beat that (don't quote me though...).
Had no problems overclocking corsair 3200 CL2.5s reasonably (in a NF4-4X board), but couldn't get the latency down.

I would say that GEIL Value Performance RAM is the best "bang for buck".

    2 x 512mb for £68

It may also likely be BH5 - which is schweeeeet

Yeah I'd agree with that. If you want low latencies and good overclockability, and you're not afraid to give them lots of volts, you'd be best off getting some Winbond BH5/CH5 or UTT. But when you're buying geil value RAM, it's a lottery whether you receive winbond or not.

If you want guaranteed winbond chips then you're looking at twinmos speed premium or geil ultra-x, which is about £90 per gig.
