About LinkBacksI recently built my shuttle and just got a windows XP pro cd to install onto it. When I turn on the computer I hear all the fans running and everything but my moniter stays idle. What are some possible explainations? Thank you.

Do you hear any beeps from the computer? All the motherboards I have used beep once or twice during a normal bootup.
Try taking non essential bits out e.g. optical drives, floppy drive, optical drives.
Check that the heatsink is properly mounted, and connected to the motherboard.
Do you have any other components you try swapping in to elimate the various parts of your computer?
Try taking all the RAM out. This should cause the motherboard to start beeping - if it doesn't, I would say it was probably the motherboard, or possible the PSU.

Would not having a floppy drive cause anything like this?
Shouldn't do - like I said, hard drives, floppy drives, and optical drives are not essential for the machine booting up, at least past the POST screen. By the way, you should also try taking out the PCI cards.

I would suggest taking out the RAM - the motherboard (if its working) should start beeping in some pattern or another (should be in the manual) to indicate the absence of RAM when you turn it on - if it doesnt make any beeps I think its safe to assume the mobo is faulty.

I tried taking out the RAM and I heard no beeping.
Well, I think its safe to assume you Mobo is faulty. Any system i've messed about with has always beeped in a pattern of some sort in the absence of a vital component, such as RAM.

This is a common problem with Shuttles and the cause is really unknown.
Use the 'reset' CMOS function to boot up.
Unplug the power cord from the rear of your PC. and wait 30sec. Use a Biro and insert it in the reset hole at rear/bottom near monitor plug for 10sec.[this sets bios to fail-safe defaults] re-plug the power cord and screen should boot up so if it does press your delete button to get into bios, use arrows to go to 'Health' , enter, [fans will turn down to normal],escape and go to 'set optimized defaults', enter, Y for yes, enter and then F10 to save and Y for yes. PC should now boot-up to OS.

Here is what you do mate to solve your problems:
Do the 'reset' to failsafe and boot to Bios. Use the arrows to go to "Integrated Peripherals" > "on-board PCI Device" > "On chip audio" and turn the "auto" to "Off"> escape> F10 or Save and Escape [depending on bios.
Your PC will now boot normally.
Problem [mostly] solved. The Cpu doesn't recognize the on-board sound so it won't boot normally. Change to a Newcastle or Winchester CPU or get a sound card. You still might have USB problems though. Best to change the CPU.
