New hard drive! Yay! But which manufacturer...

Hey people

I'm in the market for a new hard drive. I'd like:

160Gb
SATA
the more cache the better

But there's no many out there for about £60. I'd really just like feedback on the manufacturer. I've got a WD and Maxtor IDE drives at the mo and I've never had any trouble with either of them. My mobo has SATA on it so I thought I'd go that route.

I have two Samsung SP1614C SATA drives running in a RAID 0 solution. They are not the fastest drives available but are pretty nippy. The one thing I do like about them is they are soooo quiet - you just can't hear them

I had one fail on me and warranty support was professional and prompt - no hassles and a 4 day turnaround.

I've just bought a 200Gb Maxtor Diamondmax 10 (i think) SATA, not opened it up yet...

(same reasons as you, never had SATA so thought I'd try it!)

It was recommended to me by these very nice guys here.

I can't really afford a 200GB one...I have an 80gb at the mo and that's big enough, so my plan is to partition it into 2 x 80Gb drives and ghost it onto the other partition every now and again

They're the same price though, and do a 160Gb for a bit less!

I think everyone has their personal favourites when it comes to HDs. Over the years I've used Seagate (crash'n'burn), Connor (nightmare), Maxtor (ATA 133 ran hot and would shut down, but fine with some additional cooling). My preference for the past 4 years has been HGST (formally IBM). The SATA 7K250 series are wonderfully quiet. Installing SATA2 T7K250 when I get the chance.

Well yeah, there is that... I usually stay with what I know... and I was recommended the Maxtor drives, and went with that as I've had plenty of Maxtors before...

Cooling is always an important issue anyway, I always make sure there's some sort of air running over my HDDs!
It's a mechanical item, it's gonna get hot! Get that airflow going!

I have two of them, and think they are great drives! Sooo quiet, and neither have them have given me any problems, unlike my old Hitachi/IBM drives.

Seagate are another good option. Drives have come down in price a bit it seems... you could get this 200GB Seagate for a few pund more than the 160GB version.

If thats not an option, go for the Samsung, or the Maxtor!

Just to let you know performance (and I know people will have faster disks) but in RAID 0 I'm getting about 77Mb/sec average with 180Mb/sec peak as reported by HDTach

See, my other option was getting a couple of 40gb drives and having them in raid 0, but I can't be bothered with all that. MY 80gb WD is fast enough for me, so an SATA drive will be great.
