I get this message when i connect the cable to other devices:

Tried it with xbox and another laptop, its a crossover cable. I don't spend much time with networks so i'm not sure what it means
It means that a DHCP server wasn't found so it's assigned itself an automatic private address. You might have to manually configure the IP addresses to get the network to work.
So, i'm trying to connect to an xbox that has an IP address that i can see. It's 192.168.0.3 . I'm connected directly to it via the crossover cable and i'm just trying to set up an FTP between the two devices.
Networks always cause me trouble :(
EDIT: Oh, another thing. I connect to the internet via wi-fi, which is setup and works fine.
I don't want to mess with that at all, so will messing with the 10/100 IP affect my internet/wi-fi?
Set the PC NIC to 192.168.0.x (i.e. 192.168.0.4) see if it works then

As long as the wifi isn't on the 192.168.0.x range you should be fine. If it is, reset the Xbox to 192.168.1.x and the PC 10.100 NIC to 192.168.1.y
The wi-fi is set on 192.168.1.X
The wi-fi router is set at 192.168.1.1, and i really don't want to mess anything up there as it has been running smoothly for months and it took me hours and hours to set it up correctly.
I just really need a basic direct access FTP over the crossover to the xbox, nothing fancy.
Just set the PC 10/100 to 192.168.0.4
