Using a 7800GTX with multiple screens...

I have an XFX 7800GTX currently using a single 23" 1920x1200 widescreen LCD via one of the DVI ports. I know that you can use the second DVI socket to output to another screen but what I was wondering is if it has to be the same resolution or can be something totally different?

This is in particular reference to a screen I would like to get which is an LG 1980Q 19" 1280x1024 to have rotated to Portrait mode and I was wondering if the gfx card can be set to manage one screen landscape, and one portrait of different resolutions at the same time?

    Thanks,

    ShMeE

You shouldn't have any problems doing that. I did it with my old Ti4600 years ago, had a17" CRT at 1600x1200 and a 17" TFT at 1280x1024. There'll be an option in the display settings that allows you to choose each output and select a screen res for it and choose if you want both screens to be the same or if you want to stretch your desktop across etc...

My big question though I suppose is if it's possible to have one rotated while the other isn't?

Again, I think that is in among the options in display settings. I don't have this card so can't say for sure, but if you've got a spare monitor plug it in and try it before spending out on a new one if thats what you've got to do.

Ok, well I now have two displays on my desk, BUT.....

Using the software that I have I cannot get a horizontal span working where the screens are of different resolutions I am trying to have the main screen at 1920x1200, and the second at 1024x1280 (yes portrait)!

Any advice on software I should try using? Because in Windows Display Settings, it controls the two screens as one if you get what I mean because technically they are connected to the same graphics card, albeit different DVI sockets??

Let me summarize this better, what I would like is for Windows to detect the screens as two seperate displays, rather than a single connected one, is this possible? Please help!!!

This seems to be the most relevant Microsoft bit of info:
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d..._overview.mspx

I just don't get why when I right-click on the Desktop --> Properties --> "Settings" Tab, it does not allow for 2 monitors there which I know from using laptops gives the desired options

Well after 10+ hours of trying, i've finally got it working

Wowzers it's nice to play CSS on 1920x1200 but still have a screen showing my e-mails and msn conversations on

The simple solution was to restart the computer with the DVI cables connected to the GFX card, but disconnected from the monitors. I don't know why that would have made windows detect seperate display adaptors, but it did!

Am I wrong to think this was as simple as using the Nvidia display properties and selecting what viewing mode you want in there?

yes, that was not the case, that does not let you use screens of different resolutions.

It is a fundamental flaw with the nView software that you can only set it up to work with multiple identical displays, whereas Windows own software allows them to be different and have one rotated, but not the other. I am not sure how the Windows software kicked in over nView, but it did.
