    Arhhhh Sound Card problem

I had working sound this afternoon, and have only now noticed that it's not working after having installed a lot of things today. I have system restored back to when I know it was working (no luck) and reinstalled my sound card drivers (again nothing). What should I try next?

check volume settings? make sure speakers are working? sorry if you've tried those but it's easy to forget the simple things and it's good to start there.

Yepo, 100% certain speakers are working, just using single line out plug.

And volume settings look as they should.

Is it possible that I could somehow have damaged something on the motherboard while playing around inside that has effectively "broken" the sound card on it?

Ok, I've worked it out I think, earlier I was trying to connect up the front line out socket which connects on the motherboard right next to where the line out socket on the back is. I gave up because it was too fiddly, but I think in trying I must have destroyed it . I was not in the mood for this as getting out the motherboard would be an unbelievable pain. I think I may buy a PCI soundcard, but all of the sockets are in use so again this is going to be annoying.

    WHY WHY WHY!!!

No, I couldn't get the pins all in - it was too fiddly for me.

I think it's highly likely that by static or physically somehow it has got broken, i have always used an earth wire but can't think of another valid reason.

Check for a couple of jumpers on the front panel audio connectors.

You'll need to loopback two sets on 99% of motherboards so the rear works,

Yup that's all it is. You need to either connect the front panel correctly, or put the jumpers back as they were.
