Any problems with bringing parts back from HK?

    Hey all

Am going to Hong Kong sometime soon and was wondering if there is any compatibility problems with bringing back processors or graphics cards?

Also, would it be cheaper over there? I know electronics are much more cheaper over there but does that apply to computer parts too?

    Thanks in advance

    PT

I just came back from Hong Kong a few days ago (with a lot of souvenir need to sell). It will be cheaper there, but be aware that the custom have 140 pounds gift allowance only and you may need to pay 17.5% VAT on top of your stuff if you are unlucky.

If you mean ram, Elixir ram in UK is cheaper than any ram in HK, if you mean high end ram it is cheaper. Don't try to buy a lot of stuff. The Seagate harddrives are VERY CHEAP there (85 quids for 300G SATA, probably even cheaper now), you get global warranty for Seagate and Maxtor harddrive (but not WD, Hitachi and Samsung).

When you come back to UK you should be taking as little luggage as possible, lots of luggage draws attention from the custom officers. You know all the bombings down there in London, my city's airport had no custom officer on duty 3 yrs ago, now it does.

God knows how they charge, from what I heard, they charge either by your claimed price, or your invoice price, or a price they set (if yours seems fake)

They don't check everyone, but they tends to pick people with loads of luggages or looks suspicious.

Thats all I could say, enjoy your shopping.

Cheers for the advice guys. Very helpful.

Am actually popping over to Shanghai as well for a couple of days sightseeing. Bet it must be even cheaper there although prob counterfeits and dodgy so won't dare to buy there.

Should know where to visit just that never looked for computer parts in past trips over there. Customs were non-exisitent 2 years ago.

Arthur, whats the next big thing on ebay? (you are selling on ebay, right?) Might look around since I am over there.

I'm wondering will I sell higher in Ebay (minus paypal fee minus ebay commission, etc) than selling in Hexus.

I got 8 sticks of 1GB ram preparing to sell. 4x1G sticks run DDR510 prime stable and another set of 4x1G still testing, should be stable at 480~490 I believe

DFI was rebranded as Grandmars there, so you may not have seen it. Loads of shops were selling NF4-D (I was there 2 months ago), but with a Grandmars sticker, did you went to some no-name shops?

Lian Li cases weren't popular is probably true, since the case are too expensive for Hong Kong people's taste. There are a lot of coolermaster cases, although not as high end as wavemaster and stacker, those low-end models are everywhere. You have to order Thermaltake cases though.

You can get XP-90 and XP-120 there but only available in a few shops, you have to find them.

They don't sell in Mong Kok computer centre, but in Golden Computer center. The XP-90 was a bit late I admit, think it is Early-July before it is available.

Depending on what you buy, it can be best to lose the packaging... I mean, if you head over there and bring back fully packaged items, then they're obviously new. If you bring them back unpackaged, then you can make out that you had them with you when you went, and there's then no VAT applicable. Not so ideal for graphics cards or the like, but camcorders, digital cameras, high-capacity flash media, etc.
The next big thing on eBay's pretty hard to spot - it could be the next evolution of the RoboSapien, or Poker Chips (which is what I've been selling on eBay), but do be honest, a lot of the people making substantial sales on eBay are either based in Hong Kong, or are importing shipments at a time to minimise per-unit costs.
You're probably better off looking at electronics goods, rather than computing components, though, since it's the radio-control gadgets, portable media players, DVD players, etc, which are relatively cheap over there.

I came back from Japan with about £300 worth of games and consoles in my rucksack (a Dreamcast, dance mat, Samba maracas, and loads of DC and Saturn games). Was a bit worried about customs but my plane arrived at the same time as a charter flight from Spain- and then when I got to customs they'd all gone home for the day anyway! That was in 2001 though.

I've never been checked when coming back, and have walked away loads of times without declaring things to customs, and I don't know anyone who has been checked on the way back. I have seen someone checked on the way out though.
