    HDD temp

    hi guys this maxtor ive got is really hot to touch like feels like it will burn ya

    is that normal? 250gb maxtor plus 9

    that means you need a good fan to cool it down. my case has a 120mm fan blowing the harddrives & they are cold btw =).

    Download Dtemp it's a freeware program that will tell you what tempreature your hard drive is at. Try it after defragmenting your drive to give the highest temp, I would say it should be below 60c to be safe.

    If not, as in above post, put a fan in front of it, most tower cases have room for at least 1 fan at the front.

    Speedfan is very good as well and has cpu temp etc and if i remember is free. personnally i wouldent want a drive going over 50c. but would really want it at 30c

    Most HDDs have a temp probe, they have S.M.A.R.T. on them, when it first came out it was a nightmare, but its much better now.

    my fileserver has a 160gb and a 20gb hdd pretty much on top of each other and they are completely cool with just an 80mm blowing on them

    Definately get some airflow across the surface my friend. I have 2x 80mm fans running at 7v blowing air across 4 Raptors which are always cool to the touch. Heh, you should try cooling an old SCSI drive sometime: I once let one run by itself to take the temps and the surface casing burnt the skin of my fingertip off when it hit around 80 degrees

    Dtemp doesn't work for me. :/

    Oh yeah, seagate has an online smart status thing which is handy for just quickly checking your drive temps etc. without installing monitoring apps:
