Athlon 939 4000+ Overclock

Hey guys,

I've just built a new PC with an Athlon 64 4000+ on an ASUS A8N SLi (not deluxe or premium). I've overclocked my 7800GTX fine, but I would like to get an extra 200mhz out of my CPU.

I've overclocked a P4 3.0ghz before to 3.4ghz on an Abit IC7G, but that was a peice of cake, just upping the FSB until it crashed, then lowering it again to find a stable speed.

Athlon boards / CPUs are completely new to me, I don't know how this HyperTransport works, I've also lost touch with memory timings and how they play a part in your overclock. I have Corsair XMS PC3200 C2 in 1gb TwinX factor by the way.

To help the guys who know, this page has screens of the BIOS interface on the A8N SLi Premium, it's exactly the same on the normal A8N which I have.

Is there any links, guides and tutorials to overclocking an Athlon 64 with a locked multiplier?

Anyway from what i can work out so far:

Hypertransport speed = FSB x Hypertransport Multiplier
e.g. 200mhz (FSB) x 4 = 800mhz

Cpu Speed = FSB x CPU Multiplier (as per usual)

In addition it appears you can lock the PCI bus at 33mhz (good idea) to prevent that running at an odd speed and there's some kind of 'memory divider' which governs how fast the memory runs. I'm asking questions about this atm but i *think* this is the 'maximum memory clock' setting which is usually 'DDR400'. I can't find a 'divider' setting specifically.

I'm trying to go for 2.4ghz on my system and i reckon the right settings are:

CPU Speed = 240mhz (FSB) x 10 = 2400mhz (2.4ghz)
RAM speed = 'DDR333' = ~400mhz
Hypertransport Speed = 240 x 4 = ~960mhz (or more likely locks to 1000mhz)

...but i need to play tonight to find out.

However I'm still in the wilderness like you, my old Abit IC7G had a divider property in the BIOS and I knew how to use the 1:1 and 4:3 ratios, I could only overclock my P4 3.0ghz to 235mhz in 1:1, then I had to change to 3:4 and then I could keep going upwards.

Overclocking this 4000+ to 2.6ghz effectively makes it in to a stock FX-55, just without an unlocked multiplier, i think... Nice

Need advice though, come on tech heads where are you?

Easy peasy

1st step; bump FSB to 220.
2nd step; run prime95 stress. Bump FSB in windows by 3-5MHZ at a time till you get errors (wait a few mins at each new setting). When you do roll back 5-8 MHz.

3rd step; set that FSB in bios and test everything. Twice.

Thats the easy way

ps.If you want to check your CPU ceiling, set a memory divider to 1:2 or something silly and do the above.
