Chipset heat sink to replace the asus sli-deluxe fan

Hi. My asus sli-deluxe chipset fan decided to die so scan sent me a new one. The new one is alot better and quieter but I was wondering if a good quality heatsink could do the job instead. I do overclock and leave my machine running for long periods of times though.

    Any suggestions

    thanks

I really wouldnt use just passive unless you have VERY good airflow in the case. It's the Zalman passive heatsink if you do though.

But just check if you can hear the new fan over everything else first, and if not, leave that in there. You're northbridge will thank you, and you are alot less likely to kill your warranty. Im sure many will disagree...

It's all about compatability isn't it. I've had good results with the Zallman, also the Vantec Iceberg & Coolermaster. Check hole centres & clearances then shop around for one that fits.

    chipset

I'll have a look for the mentioned heatsinks. Im not sure how great of an idea it is as i have no front fan intake to aid extra flow. Plus i just added a x850 xt pe and that seams to be the noisiest thing in my case.

I was looking at purchasing the sli-deluxe but now that my purchase has been delayed i'll probably go for the premium. One solution that i came across to the fan problem (which i was going to replace if i bought the board) was to get the zalman passive heatsink and then have a zalman fan bracket with a 120mm fan on it directly above to ensure quiet air flow over it. Quietpc sell both so may be worth a look.

The one solution that really cought my eye though was the swiftech mcx-159 which overclock.co.uk sells. The beauty about this solution is that it has a lot more mass and surface area if you use it without the fan or you can use the fan with it, reduce the speed of it with a fan speed controller or replace it with a fan of your choice. A bit pricey but looks effective. I'm not 100% certain on whether it would conflict with an X850 though dual slot cooler.

i wouldnt risk changing the bridge heatsink on an asus sli board for anything other than an asus one or maybe a danger den waterblock u could very easily burn out the chipset with a zalman
