Go for an Abit AN8-V PCI-E S939 mobo with an A64 3500 Venice

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=225529 - processor
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=230492 - mobo

this should leave you with about £100 for a gfx card, maybe a 6600gt ?

You could just squeeze a little more for a 6800GT, its tons better than a 6600GT
    Me want Ultrabook

Or you could keep the same mobo and upgrade your cpu to a Socket A XP 3000+ and a 6800GT.

don't upgrade the socket A CPU unless you are buying it second hand off ebay at a very good price (and a very good warranty!) - absolutely pointless as it is pretty much an obsolete platform.

I would go for socket 939 as XRob has said.

What about that mobo? it's SLI compatible if you want for the future..

    I would also say a Venice 3000+.

For the graphics I think a 6800gt is probably outside of your price range, although it outclasses the 6600gt easily, the cheapest I have found is £200, that puts you about £70 or so over budget. The new x800gt cards look promising, if you want to stick within budget, sometimes beat, sometimes beaten by a 6600gt depending on the game, but with shader model 3.0 could outperform in the future. THere are some standard 6800s, the 256mb models will probably pack a fair bit more punch, as reading reviews it's usually the lack of memory bringing the 128mb versions down.

    Yes, well kinda.

If you wanted to you could probably get the GT up to an Ultra (get a good brand Like XFX to make this happen)
