Question Which Athlon to partner a 7800 GTX ?

At present I'm running an Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe with an Athlon 64 3000 Venice and a Leadtek 6600GT.
I Have rubbished the idea of getting another 6600GT in SLi mode and instead going for a new 7800GTX.
But as my 3000 Venice will be a major bottle neck what do I need to upgrade my CPU to as a minimum?

    Thanks in advance

You shouldn't find it affects your performance too much.

If you don't want to spend money on a new CPU, just get a better HSF and overclock the CPU a bit.

Yeah, OC the CPU before you go out and spend money on new kit. If you could get it up to 2.4GHz (which is perfectly possible) then it wouldn't be a bottleneck.

Yeah, the 3000 venice shouldn't cause a problem but its generally appplication sepcific. It varies, take BF2 the CPU makes no difference, a system with two 7800GTXs and an FX-57 will have almost identical FPS to an identical system with a AMD 3000+ instead.

If I were building a new system now, I would have considered something like a San Diego 3700+ as a minimum to match the 7800 GTX nicely. Upgrading though, I'm really not sure that that sort of processor would be really worth the upgrade. With some decent RAM, motherboard and heatsink, the 3000 venice can be clocked very nicely, so I'm not sure it's worth worrying about it.

If I were you I'd either stick with the 3000+ and try to pverclock it a bit, or wait and save and get something cutting edge if I felt it necessary - e.g. an X2 4600+ or so on.

It won't make a huge difference, but you're right that with a 7800GTX your CPU will be bottle necking, but it won't be a major one. But the difference is that you won't see much difference if you went with a 7800GT rather than a GTX.

To remove the bottleneck on current games you'd need to get at least a 4000+. Alternatively use some of that spare gfx horse power to stick all your image quality settings on the highest levels. What resolution can your monitor do at maximum?

The 7800gtx really deserves to be paired with one of the FX processors. They cost the earth, but they are the fastest things out there. Take a game like BF2 - unless you run 4xAA and 16xAF there is no gain from going to SLI with two 7800gtx cards - infact it lowers the framerate - suggesting the impact on CPU has a greater difference on performance than nearly doubling the gfx power. (http://forums.kustompcs.co.uk/showthread.php?t=32247)

Anytime you see SLI not significantly increasing performance the most likely bottle-neck is CPU (that article done with a 3500).

That said, the 3000+ is a great processor. Are you dead set on getting a 7800gtx? IMO getting another 6600gt isn't a bad idea, and is best performance boost for the system for the money. Next thing would be a 7800GT (not gtx) and overclock your processor. Even overclocked you won't notice much difference to the gtx.

But if you really have to have the gtx, get a 4000+ or fx55/57 to take full advantage of it.

yeh i would say save you money and get some decent cooling and overclock. or a 4000+

even if there is a cpu bottleneck now, in six months time with newer games it wont be as newer games will test the 7800 more

ditto with the rest of the guys... 3000+ venice is plenty at the mo..

even if its a bottleneck, you wont really notice the difference.. i tried underclocking my 3500+ to 3000+ speeds and I get only slight differences in the CPU taxing games like UT2004 and HL2.. they all still ran fine with their lowest still above 60fps.. wont notice anything in my opinion..

If you're so inclined, 3000+ were known to clock very well. 2.4Ghz is a norm (except for arthurleung who had it really hard to get it running past 2.2Ghz)
    Me want Ultrabook

OC the Venice to 2.7GHz and you won't have a problem - it is easily done

Yeh, there will be a bottle neck but not one worth getting rid of for now, some games it makes no difference anyway, untill games go multi-thread. Buying a good cooler and OCing it will edge up performance a bit.

Doesn't seem so easy on the newer chips. My week 20 3200 bearly does 2.4ghz

Actually, your CPU would be a bigger 'bottleneck' if you went for the 2x6600GT solution than the single 7800GTX, SLi is a CPU intensive operation.. Graphics card performance is making a bigger impact on games frame rates with modern engines than CPU.. Besides your current setup can more than handle current games.. Heck my olddd 9600XT renders current games at playable rates.. Hold on to your cash and let the market battle it out for awhile.

Cpu isnt an issue on most multiplayer games as it doesnt have to sort out all the AI, come Unreal 3 etc then youll have issues.

Unreal 3 will bring issues because of the insaine texturing and models
