Thread: Psu?

    Psu?

OK, I'm planning to upgrade to the following:

    Asus P5GDC Deluxe MB
    Pentium 4 630
    2x512MB DDR2 Corsair Value
    128MB Asus X300 vid card

Using the following equipment out of my old PC for the time being:
    2x7200RPM WD IDE HDDs
    1xNEC DVDRW
    Belkin Wireless PCI card

I'm not overclocking, I'm not gaming (though you proably guessed that by the vid card ) Just using it for internet browsing and video editing. That's the spec I want - I'm not after opinions on that, but what I do want to know is what sort of PSU should I go for to power that system? I don't want anything gimmicky - no LEDs or modular cables or anything like that, but it does have to be reasonably quiet.

    Ideas anyone?

Can't go wrong with a nice tagan. Anything 450w or above should be good. They are pretty quiet and nice PSU's

How about a seasonic? Quiet as hell. You can get them from xcase in the uk, don't know if other places stock the s12 model now as it's been a couple of months since i bought mine. Have a look at silentpcreview for their reviews on the s12 models, they absolutely swear by them.

I've only had experience with two psu's

The first was a tagan 480w stealth psu, it was great, stable rails and dead quiet. However recently the 3.3v rail began to get as low as 2.8v causing restarts, and eventually one day my pc wouldn't start up.

Then bought a atx 2.0 akasa paxpower 400w psu, which is equally as quiet and produced stable rails, and they are among the cheapest. Highly recommended.

In tagan's defence they offered a 36month guarantee and are good to their word. Emailed them and within a week they came to collect the faulty one and replaced it with a brand new one! A newer version than mine with 2 pci-e power connectors, currently have it running in my system and i recommend buying a tagan psu now!

Fortron are average priced (cheaper on ebay) and depending on how quiet you want it you may have to do a fan swap.

Seasonic S12 now available from kustompcs. Koolnquiet.co.uk have been stocking them for some time.

No experience with Xcase but from other comments their packaging and service may not be very good.

Yeah, I saw the 36 month guarantee on the tagan - that's what makes it a competitor. Not heard of seasonic TBH, but i'll check them out.

Akasa one of the cheapest - might consider that

edit: jsut checked - seasonic are out of my budget - i'm not spending that much on a PSU when i'm not going to be hammering it that much. cheers anyway though

I'm running a Tagan 480W, with no problems.

I'd say for a top quality PSU i'd go for an OCZ, Enermax, Fortron or PC Power & Cooling. I quite like the Hipers too, very decent PSU's for the price and come with a 3year warranty... I recently picked up a 525watt Hiper for £48. The HPU-4S525.

The OCZ Powerstreams and PC Power & Cooling PSU's come with 5 year warranties. They are the best PSU's out there at the moment but are pretty expensive.

If your budget is under £50 checkout www.pixmania.co.uk for Fortron psus.

Personally, if I was building a system not at the absolute bleeding edge processor- and graphics-wise, I would invest a few extra quid in a passive or semi-passive PSU. quietpc has a good list.

On the other hand, modular PSUs are pretty damn cool as well, and can help improve the look (and airflow) in your enclosure. For your setup however, I would say at least 400-450W.

I think QuietPC are a bit on the expensive side.

Id say you need 400w (probably) but it depends on the rating on the rails. A good 350w unit might be okay

Ok, looks like it might be between

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=241237

    and

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=230451

Anyone have experience of these? Bear in mind my testicles are on the line if it's noisier than my current one
