    different types of ram

    Hey. Ive have pretty boring geil value ram ddr 400 dual channel 1gb. Im thinking of getting some ram thats low latency ram for overclocking. Am i best taking out the geil and sticking in some low latency or can I use them togethor?

    + will this effect the dual channel configuration if i have 2 different sets?

    using an asus sli-deluxe board

    If you have two different speeds of RAM in your computer, the RAM will have to run at the speed of the slowest RAM. So if you put in some low latency RAM, that will run at the same latencies as the value RAM. As such, since you want the low latencies, you'd have to take out the value RAM (assuming you want the speed of the more expensive RAM)

    However, you don't need to have the RAM in sync with the CPU (I assume you're using an Athlon 64 machine?). You can run it with a divider, meaning that you can increase the FSB of the CPU, while the RAM is at a lower speed. This means that you can keep the value RAM, since you don't need high RAM speeds.

    Further to this if you have 4 x 512mb modules you will be at 2T and maybe also 333MHz

    so what would be better for games

    1gb of either low latency ram or clockers ram e.g some pc 4000 (clocled odviously)

    or keeping my existing geil and sticking another matched pair 1gb in so i'll have 2gb (stock speeds)

    I'd just go for 2GB of normal RAM - I don't think the faster stuff is worth the price premium. As said, the higher clocked stuff isn't necessary with the Athlon 64, and low latencies make only a small difference.

    The Venice memory controller can run the RAM @ 400MHz with 2T - but some motherboards cannot...
