144GB Raptor?

Does it exist?

Is it near to existance?

How much is it gonna cost?

Although I suppose you could get 4 74gb ones, actually i suppose it's gonna be 148gb not 144. I confused.

Would be cool but i think it would have been out by now if it was high on WD's list. It'll probably come out sometime in the future though, or perhaps some sort of updated 10,000rpm drive range - Raptor II

next update will probibly for SATAII, but I wouldn't see 148GB disks coming out, have you seen the prices for them sized SCSI disks?

I think well see a raptor that has NCQ support before we see one with more capacity. Mainly becaise as far as performanec goes raptors simply arent that amazing anymore, although they do still have the OMGWTF10KRPMRAID0PWNZJOO factor

TCQ and NCQ is way overrated, I put my raptors on a TCQ enabled promise controller and the performance actually dropped significantly for general (read random) use, and TCQ is the more mature and avanced version of command queing!..

Command Queing is just that, it Ques commands and reorders them in order to optimise read/writes of data on the platers, while this is great when the disks are heavily loaded in say, a high-demand data enviroment (RDBMS would be a good example here).. but absolutely worthless for general desktop use.

Why did you think putting raptors on a TCQ enabled controller would make a blind bit of difference? The drives dont support it, so you wont see any performance increase. Id hardly say absolutely worthless for desktop use, there are many occasions when youre reading things from all over the hard disk (windows boot, game loads)

...we also fell back on four Raptor drives from Western Digital, because the 74GB WD740 model in particular already supports tagged command queuing, and benefits noticeably from this feature when operating under heavy I/O load. Also, the WD740 is still by far the fastest SATA drive on the market.

Again tcq and ncq arent the same, ncq does incerease performance. Transfer rates arent the be all and end all, indeed i wouldnt expect command queing to have any effect on transfer rates of large files.Its designed to optimise read order from different areas of the disk. Meaning on a relatively unfragmented drive where large files should be contiguous you wont see a difference.

What was the other controller? Its not a particularly scientific test to measure performance on 2 different controllers and then claim tcq was the cause of the performance drop.
