    serial ATA II

I was about to purchase a new SATA hard disk , but noticed that SATA II drives are now on sale. Are these backwardly compatible with a SATA interface and can I use the same cable?

    Many Thanks for your help

Sata II is not backward compatible as such, you need a mobo that supports Sata II to enable you to boot etc. However, Sata II drives are shipped in Sata I mode to ensure backwards compatability, Sata II mode needs to be enabled by a utility program supplied by the manufacturer...

Just to confirm - I can buy a SATA2 drive and plug it straight into the SATA interface on my motherboard and all should be OK?

Yeah, that will be fine. It will work as SATA as standard.

But if and when you get a motherboard with SATAII features you will need to configure the hard drive to work as SATAII.

    Eh?

There's a lot of confusion about SATA-II. SATA-II was originally the name of the body formed to create extensions to SATA. They're now known as the SATA-IO group.

SATA-II isn't a SATA standard. However, you can get new extensions to SATA. These include NCQ, 3Gbps and more. Any extension is designed to be backwards compatible with the original spec.

So, yeah a 'SATA-II' (no point avoiding calling it that now that marketing machines have got their hands on it) drive will work, but your SATA controller will need to support any extensions to make use of them.

according to IBM, if you plug a sata II enabled hdd into a mobo that doesn't support sata II, the drive will not operate...

Oh dear. That's not really backwards compatibility at its best, is it?

    Oh well.

So where can one find such a utility program to 'enable' SATA II ? I have a HGST/IBM 80GB SATA II with my OS on and was unaware that I needed to 'do anything'........I just installed XP on it, connected to the nForce4 SATA II controller........all went fine (good news for compatibility ) but now I figure I need to 'enable' SATA II .......
