    That wikipedia article is incorrect. The chip is a (mobile) sempron, not an XP-M.

    It could very possibly OC quite well, but not on that motherboard.

    More importantly, it's a K8 Sempron based on a 130nm core. So, as far as I can tell, the motherboard he has bought should work. I don't think those boards OC all that well though as oralpain says.

    When you install the processor and heatsink, check that the HS is making good contact with the core; AFAIK mobile semprons don't have a heatspreader and so you can sometimes get poor contact between HS and CPU core. If you get no contact you can fry the chip as soon as you turn it on!.

    Nearly all A64 motherbaords will shut off the instant the on die temps hit 94C. This takes about a quarter second with no heatsink contact (ive done it). The chip will normally be fine though (mine survived 6 tries before I finanly realized what the hell I was doing and stoped).

    thanks for the valuable + greatly appreciated advice. the web review i read about the board said it was a good overclocker, unlike the asus one i nearly bought that said you couldn't lock the agp/pci clock. i know i should make a new post but anyone know how to o/c these? old days was just fsb x cpu multiplier. how does the hyper transport come into the equasion? is the cpu multiplyer locked on this odd chip? i have ddr400 (pc3200) ram how does this tally with hyper transport? is it quad pumped? i.e. pc3200 = 800 HEELP!!

    P.S.
    how do u check that the hs has good contact with cpu? apart from excessive temp! any advice on how best to attach it? & will it kill the mobo if the chip is incompatible?

    follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Inspect carefully before turning it on. It's quite hard to mess up a normal HSF installation on a S754/939 chip....

    This is not a 'normal' installation, since his chip won't have a heatspreader.

    Indeed. Following normal installation procedure with any heatsink that uses the existing/stock mounting bracket, will result in a computer that will not boot.

    the arctic cooling hs/fan says it comes with a spreader. can i use this? will it help my cause?

    This is what an AMD CPU looks like without a heatspreader. That metal piece in the middle is the CPU, and if you apply the Heatsink with uneven force, you will chip that CPU and it will fry as soon as you hit the switch, if it does anything at all.

    Apply the heatsink slowly with even force straight down as much as possible, and do not under any circumstance twist the heatsink when it is in contact with the CPU. You will chip it if you twist it and it will be toast.

    This is a picture of an AMD CPU with a "heatspreader" on it. You can see all the stuff is completely covered and sealed in by a metal spreader that contacts the CPU underneath and spreads the heat out over a larger surface. They tend not to be quite as efficient at cooling as a directly applied heatsink, but the tradeoff in safety is well worth it.

    The only additional safety measure that exists was called a CPU Shim, and I am not aware of any that are made for the mobile/Semprons, unless they have the same config as an XP. I wouldn't risk it, because if it's too tall, your HSF won't contact the CPU and it will get way too hot way too fast.

    Here is what a shim looks like, depending. I had one that was much more open than either of those though.

    just got hs/fan. it doesn't have a spreader it has a retension module(???) that must be bolted to mobo first.. er.. guess this doesn't help heat spready thing.. still awaiting arrival of chip, hopefully end of week/begining of next.

    Just do a test fit. Install the processor, put a blob of thermal goop on and then carefully install the heatsink. Then remove it and check that the core has made full contact with the base of the heatsink, there should be a core shaped bit of very thin goop with a thicker bit round the edge where it's been squeezed out. If it works, clean the core and HS, apply fresh goop and reinstall. If it doesn't work you'll have to modify the mounting somehow to get the HS to sit lower.
