    Upgrading soon...opinions please

Hey Guys its upgrade time for me!

I'm not uber rich but i'm gettin a lil bit of money £500 oddish

    Current setup
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.2ghz (gonna try and do more)
    2 x 512 Corsair 4400
    Abit An8 ultra nf4 mobo
    Powercolour x800xl
    Sata Seagate barracuda 200gb
    nec 16x dvdrw
    Akasa Eclipse 62 case
    Tagan 480w psu

I'm thinking of selling the cpu/ram/gfx
    and getting...
    Athlon 64 3700+
    2 x 1gb corsair 3200
Next gen gfx card (7800gtx but i'l prob wait till ati release theirs...if/when they do)

    Wise choice?
I mainly use the pc for downloadin (BT) and gaming but i'm startin uni this year and i'll use it for work/programmin etc.
But i wont be needed a x2 processor till games use it!

    Thnx!

Defo get the 2GB of Ram.

I'd wait for ATi's R520 or higher core before you decide about the graphics tho.

You don't need to upgrade your CPU at the moment, but I believe its worth going Dual Core.

You'll need your money for freshers

    What uni you off to?

You don't need an upgrade, in my opinion.

That PC should still be able to play anything you throw at it - you may as well wait, and perhaps buy something when it starts to struggle (especially since prices should be lower then).

doing a upgrade is unnecessary. Your PC can handle anything. The only upgrade that you could, and taht is unnecessary to, is to a Athlon64 X2

You should sell the 3000+ to some newb on ebay (or at uni!) and buy a 3200+ venice, which will almost certainly clock to something way over 2.5Ghz. Which is quick. The price/performance on a 3700+ (same core!) therefore doesnt make sense.

Also be aware that I run 4 512 ddr on my venice @ 2.55 (166 divided mem clock though, or a bit more....) . Works fine. Maybe sell the 2 512 and get 2 1gb i should be doing that too.

An aftermarket cooler for the x800xl is a good buy too. Try the ATI-DNA modified drivers for a free speed boost

    Hey mate,

Well i'm gonna try and save myself some cash.

I'm gonna sell my 3000 winch and buy a 3200 venice and try my luck o/cing it.
I think i'll stick with my ram to see what i can reach with the new core.
And i already have a zalman cu cooler for my x800xl

Are all venice's good overclockers then?

Not all - but the low voltage and excellent memory controller sure does get 'em high

OCUK is saying 4-7 days for the zalman. £10 cheaper at scan though

Upgrade sounds good, cant stretch to a 3500+? could be useful for programming etc

In my opinion upgrading from a 3000 to a 3200 venice isn't really worth the money, you'd be better spending a bit more and getting a 3800 or 4200 - 4800, which will last for longer. Seems like you have some money to spare. Just a thought.

Well it will be a benefit shifting from the winchester core to the venice, and hopefully i can get some higher overclocks. I read that the new f.e.a.r game will be compatible with dual core processors so i was thinking of a 3800 x2. But i'm not poor but i'm not rich if you know what i mean, i don't want to spend too much Just have my pc going happily along with enough eye candy to make me blind

I know this sounds crazy but i've got a 19" diamond pro 930sb which is v.nice (best crt i've used) but my mate is giving me his 22" diamond pro 230sb which is just crazy!! my tv is 21"! Tis gonna be crazy! (can't afford a decent sized tft )

So i can run games at ridiculously high resolutions!

Is it worth to get anything higher than a 3200? i originally wanted to get a 3700 san diego and o/c it to fx speeds but there is no point in buying the higher priced single cores when dual core is the future right?

Maybe when i need a dual core i'l sell my 3200 and get one, but right now i can't justify the price.

Btw programming...i haven't learnt anything yet, i've got a c++ book which i've just started reading, i've downloaded a compiler is programming v.cpu intensive? then maybe i do need a x2 so i can play game while it compiles!
