Just got an Akasa EVO 33 Heatpipe HSF...

...and hell fire it's the loudest thing i have ever heard in a PC by miles!!! On low speed it's virtually silent but does not really cool the CPU anymore than the reference HSF which is about 1 third of the size. I'm sure on high it will cool the CPU much more, but it's competely unbearable. Not even the most extreme die hard overclocker could surely want such a beast. I have honestly never known anything like it and i'm not joking, it really is actually louder than most hairdriers i have heard. It's huge as well and might not even fit in many cases. I got it as a recomendation from CustomPC mag as it was on thier 'elite list' and won thier group test by a considerable margin. I think i will have to be more careful taking purchace advise from them again.

Oh well, you live and learn i guess. I will just use it to experiment with then look for something else more ballanced. Just giving people a heads up who might be considering buying one; Think twice - it may keep your CPU very cool, but your blood will be boiling after about 5 minutes of it on medium-full speed.

the evo 33 has a 60mm fan I think - they are small, whiney and dont cool much at all at low speeds. Theres an evo 120 version with a 120mm fan on - it cools better and is far quieter from the db specs - 15db low speed to 29.8db high speed.

Yeah, on low it nice and quiet but i don't think it's really any quieter than the reference stock one. What temps are you getting BTW?

Yeah i bought that too on the recommendation of custom pc (i also bought an asus star ice but i won't go into that lol)

It has a 80mm fan on it right? I've got it on low and its the loudest part of my pc My temps are
    35 idle and 45 load
    3000 winchester 1.45v @ 2.2ghz

I want to change it for that new zalman cpu cooler. I thought i saw a thread about it on here somewhere but i can't find it

Does anyone know when it will be released?
    (sorry for the thread hijacking!)

I have an 80mm one, and it's ****e loud but does keep the temps down whilst I have a 10% overclock.

I was thinking of changing the fan on it, would that make much of a difference to the noise levels?

You could probably get a much quieter fan. In fact i think Akasa are sugesting you do that by the fact the fan does not come attached. Maybe one of those SilentX ones or something. (BTW, don't trust coolermaster fans - When they say 'silent' i think they must have a copy of a dictionary i have never seen). I will try one and let you know. Do us a favour and let me know if you get one worth recommending too.

Oooh thats rather cheap!! hmm...does anyone have any of these?

I don't think i can ever trust custom pc anymore...

Did you read their latest review on the samsung sata 2 hd, it said something like...
"it may be faster than the 74 raptor, but this may not be the case as we have only a few programs installed on thsi drive and the raptor was the main drive...how can they compare the results if it isn't tested fairly! :O"

I'm feeling that, if you are buying heatsink less than 20 quids, its not going to be much better than the stock heatsink.

ive never used that particular one but i have a 120mm panaflo here and its very very quiet (and i think my noisetaker PSU is a joke) despite being their "high speed" model.
