    Post PSU Died!!!

Just a little disaster story to share with you (and yes you do care)...

Was happily posting away when I heard an unusual sound eminating from my PC (was actually the hum of the PSU, which was not covered up by the fan). I moved towards the open side and could smell burning . I checked speed fan for my temps. and all was fine. For the past few months my PSU fan started up by grinding and then when it got going it contininued happily, so I placed my hand by it, and there was no airflow . It was just v. v. hot. So I closed everything and tried to shutdown but was taking so long so I just hit the power button.

Once it had cooled down a bit I took out the PSU and took it apart (health and safety inspectors get out). Took out the v. dusty fan and replaced it with another one I have. Gave the PSU a bit of a clean at the same time.

Problem, the fan had been soldered to the PCB so after not being able to find insulating tape and a lack of success with glue gun insulating the ends of the cut wires I cut them as short as possible. I was going to use terminal blocks but couldn't find any spare ones. I then had the fan (molex connected) cables coming out of the shell of the PSU and plugging into itself! I wacked on the cover and screwed it all back together.

Testing Time; I have a spare 133MHz board and CPU for testing stuff on so plugged it into and RCD and then onto that fired it up and it worked.

Put it back in my case, connected it all up and it's happy again . I have now got it plugged in through an RCD, so if it decides to blow up then I have a small bit of safety.

And that's why I've been away for the past 45 mins. I was starting to have computer withdrawl symptoms . So I'm up and running again . I will try and get another one ASAP as I know it isn't exactly the safest option to run it as.

N.B. People I know the risks associated with this, but quite seriously in terms of GCSE work I had to have my computer. And with PC World's cheapest PSU being 29 quid I wasn't just going to go out quickly and replace it. Thankfully the heat hadn't done the PSU too much harm either.

DONATIONS TOWARDS THE BROKEN PSU FUND ARE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED!!!!!

SO the WINNER agrees to pay for S/H - Hardly Free then is it
