I think that all <80GB IBM/Hitachi drives are already made by Excelstor and most(?) >120GB drives are made by Hitachi itself.
Since <80GB does not require too advanced equipments, so Excelstor have good enough equipment to produce them cheaply.

the first deathstars to really have a problem were the 30 gig gxp models in 99 and 2000. i went thru 6 of them in a year on a 3 drive raid array. shocking, but well before that article i'm afraid. they used to develop a 'tic of doom', at which point turning them over maybe fixed it, or a sharp tap, but you knew to get your data off fastish.

Its well known that the IBM drives are documented to have design issues, which they later attempted to supress (its on google somewhere).
So how reliable are the Hitachi drives these days? I bought a 250Gb one and have not had any problems, so far <touch wood>. I cannot help feeling a little worried.

They're fine, it was an issue with one line of drives.
If you have a look at Excelstor reviews on ebuyer.com (the 60gb and 80gb IDE drives) there seems to be quite a lot of DOA and noisy drives, however, as far as I'm aware Hitachi above 80gb aren't made by Excelstor, but even if they are, they could be made to different standards anyway...
