    Replacement Mobo check (Abit NF7-S V2 ?)

End of last week our 2nd pc died, and was traced to a nackered mobo, probberly due to leaky caps.
    - Also, that PC need a new graphics card anyway, as i'd swiped the card for my PC! (it oridanaly had a 9600pro)

So im looking to get a new mobo and graphics card and get the pc up and running asap, before i go on holiday and then get wraped up with uni.
    - And then if/when i get time, i might have a go an swaping the caps.

The CPU is a AlthonXP 2600+ Tbred, and the memory is two sticks of 256mb twinmoss PC3200. With a 120gb hdd, etc.

    So i though i'd get a NF7-S v2 and this 9800se. - Is that a sensible choice?

    Thanks, Daniel

And if i had to knock £22 of the total spending, to get it sub£100, i could just get a 256mb 9600pro instead, right? (just in case)

Oh, and would the northbridge be happy running with a fanless cooler (ie the one of the dead 8rda+, or the blue zalman jobby i have somwhere)

I'd agree with the mobo but not the gpu, a new 9800pro (oem) is only £81 at Retek. The 9800se isn't a good card for the money.

yep that makes sense the 9800se is a let down. Retek also do the 9700pro for about £45 iirc.

So what graphics card would i be best going for?

I just want something that will go well with the current system, to the tune of about £65.

Well, as you may know (the other leaky cap thread), I did the same this weekend! My knackered Epox has now been replaced with a spangly new NF7-S! So far, so good! Clocked it straight up, and not had a single crash yet... Seems pretty rock solid so far (ie two days)!

NF7-S v2.0 FTW! My NF7 is fantastic and I wouldn't swap it for the world (well uhm... actually...).

As for the graphics, fork out as high as you can, as a 9800Pro will cream a 9800SE.
If you can though, try and get an X800LE or similar from the forums for cheap, the newer the core, generally the better.

    OK, thanks.

Also tempererally, to test it, can i put my 2600+ AlthonXP TbredA into the Abit AT7 max2?
    - Just tp check its only the mobo (already test memory/hdd/etc)

Ok, My shiny new NF7-S V2 arrived today, and ive just spent the last 2hours fitting it and hooking it all together. (took about 55mins to fit the backplate for the SLK900, which first had to be removed from the 8RDA+)

I was just thinking, can i simply fire the PC up, and all be great?
    - Seeing as both board are really very simular nforce2 boards.
    - OR do i have to reinstall windows (xp pro), which would be a MAJOR bore!!

Should be ok to fire it up. You'll probably get the Windows detected new hardware and maybe have to reboot a couple of times when it asks, but should be a very painless excersize.
