    Intel vs AMD

I've been an Intel person in all my PCs to date (apart from some Commodore machines far too long ago!) and am now considering AMD for my next PC.

Please can someone help me with comparing clock speeds - what is the AMD equivalent of Intel 3.2GHz Pentium chip?

    Thx

Intel vs AMD, what a name for a thread.

Youll just get a lot of poeple shouting AMD at you. What will you use the pc for?

PC will be used for mixed purpose - games, office work, internet. Possibility of Oracle database, although I hope to keep work and play separate!

So if the spec of the processor is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ S939 1MB (2.2), then the clock speed is 4.4 Ghz? What's the 2.2 figure?

No the clock speed is 2.2ghz. AMDs cpus have lower raw speeds but are more efficient so they use a rating system to help give an idea of performance (arguably).

The dual core refers to two cores on one die each running at 2.2.

you wont get twice the performance, but it will be a make an improvement over a single core if you either multi task or have a mulitheaded programme.

AMD is the chip of choice for most users, there cheap(ish), overclock well and you probably wont have to buy a new board when they release the next version of thie chips (unlike Intel).

AMd actually run at a lower speed than intel although performance can be better... for games, audio and all things general AMD rule, video encoding and all things general and for those who like to feel the heat coming from their black box, then Intel.

Also (high end) boards and (high end) RAM are cheaper for AMD users aswell.

Dual core is the way of the future as well so whomever you choose get a dually if you can afford it.

    Thanks Scarlet.

Do I need to consider any other changes if I go AMD instead of Intel (other than motherboard, CPU fan and PSU compatibility?)

Are there any "gotchas" for first time AMD builders?

make sure the PSU is compatiable (version 2.01 for PCi-e)

but other than that make sure you get socket 939 and a nforce 4 board for awesome performance

Make sure your ram is the right type - AMDs take DDR, not DDR2.

oh yeah, forgot that. Oh and if your gonna overclock, AMD CPU's are better if you get a higher clock speed over more bandwidth (lower multiplier). If you dont know what I mean then you will once you check the forums (sure theres a OC thread here)

For AMD ghz to Intel Ghz its (very roughly)

    AMD: 9 cycles per clock

Intel: 6 cycles per clock (always get the clock and cycles bit mixed up but I think thats ok)

So an AMD 2.2ghz is like an Intel 3.3Ghz. Very roughly speaking of course.

Get an X2 3800+ and you'll be laughing. Be aware that some motherboards are picky with RAM as well - check on the support forum of your board choice

    This compairison is rather misleading.

AMD is mainly faster because of a shorter pipeline and on-die memory controler, not because of the greater number of execution units. 3 of the K7 and K8 execution units are FPU, which is very rearely used nowadays anyway.

Clock for clock the pentium M is as fast as an Athlon 64 in many areas, but it has the same theoretical IPC as a P4. Efficency is the key.

Anyway, the answer is AMD. Current P4s are, all round, worse than Athlon 64s. Intel is barely keeping up with AMD in areas that P4s have traditionally been good at.

Both, compaines have relative highs and lows. Intel is in a rut and AMD is at a peak right now. maybe Intel will close the gap soon, but atm AMD is dominating performance.

Thanks for all the useful feedback. I'm off to Scan's website to investigate motherboards, etc for AMD and to dream.......
