Do Socket A CPU's affect FSB overclocking?

The reason I ask is because I'm having a nightmate trying to get any decent FSB overclocking, he's my original set up.

AthlonXP M 2600+ (IQUAH)
1GB TwinMOS M-TEC Chips
LeadTek nForce 2 Ultra Delux Limited
Tagan 480W PSU
SP-97 + 92mm fan
80mm fan over RAM

I was never expecting much overclocking on these RAM sticks so bought some Corsair Plat PC3500 (BH-5) and started upping the FSB, couldn't get anything over 200FSB without it failing prime or memtest. Few people suggested changing mobo, so got a Lanparty B (nForce 2 Ultra400).

Same problem again, could not get over 200FSB stable in prime or memtest (RAM is on 2-2-2-11 with 3.3v). Came to the conclusion RAM must not like working in Dual Channel so got some TwinMOS speed premium BH-5 chips that WelshTOM had tested to 240 FSB 2-2-2-11 @3.2v and again, no luck with these.

240 2-2-2-11 fails almost straight away
240 2.5-3-3-11 fails after an hour
225 2-2-2-11 fails after an hour
225 2.5-3-3-11 fails after 2 hours
Currently trying 220 2-2-2-11 but not holding out much hope.

I've got a Passive Zalman on the NB which gets some air from the 80mm fan.

The only thing that I haven't changed is the CPU, could this be the problem?
All usual suspects like AGP/PCI locks are in place, tried a range of volts through the NB and CPU can run at 200*12.5 with 1.75v happily.

Any ideas? (Currently running hellfire bios Rev2)

Northbridge cooling is pretty important on nf2 boards but it seems like you've got that covered. I had a lanparty ultra b and a 2500+m which would easily do 250x10 although the highest fsb I got was 264 although way down at 264x7.

Best place to try is www.dfi-street.com, I do seem remember from there that twinmos speed premium hasn't had very good results on lanparty ultra bs.

You could try popping the multiplier right down to say 8 so you know you're stable processor speed wise and start at 200x8 and work up in 5mhz steps from there.

How are you testing the ram? memtest or prime95? memtest isn't massively useful as often you can fail memtest and have windows stable and vice versa. Prime95 blend is a bit more useful.

Maybe change from hellfire rev2 to the 6/19 bios just so any of the custom romsips in hellfire's bios don't add any problems. Once you get stable in the 6/19 go from there to hellfire or tictac and work to get those stable.

Some NF2 boards won't clock. Mine was very unhappy about anything over 200. I just ran high multipliers instead.

I got an NF7-s v2 and it will not go over 200 and be stable, tried it all and no joy.....given up now....q happy with 200 x 12 out of an xp2500m :)

he's using a lanparty ultra b which will easily get above 230mhz and most will hit 250mhz.

Any luck yet Furton?

No he isn't. He's using the Leadtek board. The lanparty is made by DFI.

He just hasn't made it very clear

Can't even get stable on 200FSB 2-2-2-11, very strange. All these tests done with a low mutli. Think it's time for a different BIOS or possibly the L12 mod?

Found the problem, disabled CPC (which changes it from 1T to 2T) and I've just ran 220 2-2-2-11 for 10 hours stable, testing at 240 right now and it's looking good after a few hours. Will try 250 tmr:D

All that's left to do is wack the multi up to it's proven 2.4Ghz stable from my other board. Happy days.
